Everyone says the combo switch is behind the steering wheel in my 81 zx but there only wires back there goes to the ignition, blinkers and hazards but theres no switches or relays

there is no switch or relays just wires directly to my ignition, blinkers and hazards behind my steering wheel everything looks stock but even when I chase the wires down they dont lead me to a combo switch. according to the manual I take off the wheel then the column cover and its right there waiting to be unplugged, BUT theres nothing there but wires! Is it the entire blinker arm and assembly? the wires come in straight to each part. Could it be the relay under the hood thats with all the other relays by the service light? Please help! I'm either blind, dumb, or both. Damnit!, Anyone wanna tyrade my 1981zx for there 77 cuz I'm starting to hate this **** thing.

It's the blinker assembly........a 1981zx is a better car than a 1977.The relay under the hood is also for the lights but never goes bad I would think.

perhaps not. We know it's at least that long but don't know it's not longer. We can surmise or test. Is the procedure in the FSM?

Re: Everyone says the combo switch is behind the steering wheel

Combination switch is a set of switches that handle a combination of things. In this case, yes, blinkers, headlights, high/low beam and on some cars cruise control.

If you need one, shoot me an e-mail and I can help you out for cheap. Got two spares in the garage right now.

No offense Thunder, but there is no way in He11 that a '81zx is a "better car" than a '77z. Or any year first gen, for that matter.

That is up for debate,

The brakes are better
Love the 1st gen fuse box melt down
The interior is better/J
The OEM wheels are better
The radio is better
HVAC is better
Turbo is better
Electrical/wiring is better
Power assisted options better

Your turn, list what is better with a first gen than a zx

They're lighter, and a bit more stylish I must say! I don't know about you but I'll take a 240Z over a ZX any day.

Re: Everyone says the combo switch is behind the steering wheel

I'll give you brakes and turbo, but everything else about the first gen cars is better. Don't get me wrong, power steering and windows are nice and I have a '83 ZXT as well as a '78 Z and have owned a '91 300ZX, but in my mind the first gen cars are Z's. As soon as they added the X to the equation everything changed, and imho, not for the better.

Re: Everyone says the combo switch is behind the steering wheel

Looks/style don't make it a functionally "better" car.
I loved the 1972 Corvette but the Z06 Vette is a better car.
