84 toyota supra 5speed vs.78 280z 5speed

ok the guy down the road has a 84 supra he is a real prick he says the supra i believe its a2.8 or 3.0 v6 he says that it could take my 78 280z at top speed and be at least 5 cars length ahead i have a 83zx motor in my z and a 3.90 posi with a header his is just a stock supra just wondering what his would be better at low end and what would happen in a race for top end as well any info would be cool.

It alls depends on the driver, but the 5MG that was in the Supra/Celica isn't powerful at all. If you're not a lousy driver you'll beat him by 5 car lengths...

Race him....

You will beat him. He has a 2.8 twin cam with 145 hp a 5spd and a 3.7 lsd..yes a lsd..it was standard equipment....
With your 3.9 you will stomp him..he will have fairly good grip off the line though because of the lsd..so don't be nice to him..stomp him right away, or he will be hard to beat once your moving..
My buddy has one, and has since dropped in a 6mge motor a 3.0l L6 from japan..with that motor with headers, he can beat the 260hp mustangs..even on the highway...

Scott.

RE: 84 toyota supra 5speed vs.78 280z 5speed

i can tell you this one day i raced a v6 camaro from 60 to 120 and could not catch up to me (77 280z stock). well, 5speed and 3.90 differential just like yours. i am very sure you can beat him. but its true you better know how to drive. i rev my darling(car) high(almost redline) and one more thing i have a dual friction center force clutch. anyhow good luck. let me know what is the verdict

I have both, zcar takes it

Well, as an owner of both a stock '84 supra and stock '77 Z, I can say that performance is very very close between the 2 cars. The supra is good in 2nd gear, but after that, you've got him. The zcar can hit much higher speeds on the highway than the supra.

I am driving the supra while I work on the Z. The benefits of the supra (power windows, power sunroof, power doors, inflatable seats, awesome seats) are all great, but I have been beat on the road by some pretty standard cars. If you ever buy a supra, go for the turbo.

I say race him, take him on a long stretch of road and kick his ass.

RE: 84 toyota supra 5speed vs.78 280z 5speed

about 8 years ago, Rebello Racing built one of those engines for a guy that had either an 84 or 85.......after the engine was installed and running, Rebello said that those cars need better gears.....
race the guy.
