Remote radio mounting

I recently bought a new radio to put in my 260. I don't relish the idea of cutting the faceplate, though, so I was wondering:

The CD player I got has a removable face. Does anyone think it would be possible to rig up some kind of cable extension to go between the contacts on the face and the main unit? I guess the goal is to be able to keep the factory radio in place for looks, mount the head unit somewhere out of sight, and have the faceplate, complete with power and being functional, as a remote. I know that there are actual remotes for these radios, but as someone recently said, you can't see what song, station, etc... you're choosing...

Anyone done this before? Think it's possible? Any idea what would be involved?

Thanks, Cooper '74.5 260Z (12/74 mfg.) VIN RLS30069362. Possibly the last US 260Z! Anyone have one later than this?

Re: Remote radio mounting

I plan on mounting mine in the glovebox and using a remote...I figure if I don't already know what songs are on the CD I'm listening to, then I have too many CDs.

Re: Remote radio mounting

This one plays MP3s, so I plan to have more than the dozen or so songs that come on a standard CD. Having the display is, IMHO, a necessity..

Re: Remote radio mounting

You should have gotten one with the remote mount display and controls (usually wired).

I have seen many like this that play mp3s, but they are all relatively low powered as they are marine stereos.

If you are going to put an amp in the car, then this should not be a problem.

Re: Remote radio mounting

I did this to mine because well, I wanted the car to look "all buisness"

you can see the stereo mounted under the glove box.

Re: Remote radio mounting

I mounted my stereo in my glovebox. It started out just to see if I could do it and it looked pretty good so I went with it. I like it because it's out of the way and out of sight, plus the glove box can be locked whenever I go out somewhere...I eventually plan on putting a few gauges in the stock stereo location.

I pretty much have the entire stereo hidden, amp under the passenger seat and I built a sub to go in the spare tire well...Good Luck
