How to remove dash vent near the pillars
Posted by: z32d00d

Well, the good news is that I fixed some of the issues with the car, but I need a bit of help with the dash trim. I'm trying to remove the vent panels on either side of the dash to install some wire. Any tips on how to get it off without breaking anything? I'm talking about the air vent that is a separate panel right below the pillar.

Don't know if this helps you or not. If you're talking about the two vents on either end (#26 and #2) it appears there are snap tabs, not screws. I would be careful when removing.

It looks like the "panels" with the circular vents are actually part of the entire dash (1). Maybe it is not possible to remove those, dang.

Oh I see what you're talking about..

So from the vent where were you hoping to get this wire? Perhaps you can still accomplish the same thing via an alternate route?

Hardwiring the radar detector into the lighter socket via a thin wire on the headliner. I have it completed except that little vent area. I don't want to tap into the power supply at the mirror.

why not use the fusebox for your power source? Just hardwire it to the +12V supply to the "Ignition" section of the fuse block.

Why not? I installed mine that way in about 20 minutes. Of course, to each their own....

radar detectors are useless in my opinion.

Opinion noted. But they work, regularly (and I have my own statistics to back it up).

I don't want to wire in the mirror because it is power on even when the ignition is out, and it doesn't allow me to use the remote V1 display which uses the extra wires for serial communication. The wiring is perfect aside from the small jog across that vent. I did realize that you could avoid that jog by removing the pillar cover and running it inside (do they just pop off?)

yeah, I believe so (about them just popping off).
Use the fuseblock, thats the best place for an ignition power source.

I managed to pry them off and put the wiring down. It looks like there is a thermistor inside the passenger side (must be for internal temp). Anyway, I ran the line to my lighter line splitter, and it works great. Thanks for the tips.
