12K isn't that bad for the versatility of a turbocharging system on an engine that wasn't meant for it.

Or you could custom engineer your own system and have it built for a lot less... but 95% of people will just buy the pre-built kit and pay the premium price.

^Ahhahaha, throwback!

"I am 18 [and] I am going to buy my first car. I am looking at getting a used 300ZX twin turbo, probably already with a body kit and a few mods like ECU . . . I am looking to boost this thing to 900+hp on 32psi." -- kamakaze

Not to mention the VQ35DE has oil consumption issues already, without a non-factory turbo on it. Heh.

The non rev-up DE motor is fine. It's the re-up DE motor that has the oil consumption issues.

All VQ35s have the same design problem, including the V2s (which are supposedly somewhat better), it just varies based on the time frame of manufacture of the engine, the transmission and the driver.

For example the original 2003-2004s, which are not rev-ups, have oil consumption issues as well. I know an owner whose car is digesting 1 qt per 1000 miles and he hasn't modified the car at all. The problem seems to be loading the engine while downshifting causing pressure that creates blow-by, but that isn't the entire story. That is why automatics aren't showing the issue nearly as often.

The only safe engine that I know of is the VQ37, which apparently has been redesigned effectively.

Probably engine vacuum pulling oil past the valve seals or something. Its too bad VQ's are too new. If this were a Z31 forum, somebody would be ripping their own engine apart already and experimenting with their own valve seals or engine vacuum control valves and what not to see how to correct the problem.

Well, once the 370Z is in full bloom and resale value on 350's gets low enough, perhaps I'll have to be that guy who takes his VQ apart to see whats up...

Yes, it would be good to get a fix for the consumption once and for all. I suspect Nissan knows what needs to be done, but it is probably too costly for them to fix it (and it would create a demand for "new" engines on old cars).

If you decide to do it, let me know ;)

Hmmm..I check the oil level often and have not found this problem with my car.
Where is the oil going?

There's only two ways an engine loses oil:
1) oil leaks
2) it gets into the cylinder and burned up.

Its normal and necessary for really small amounts of oil to be burned in the cylinders on any engine, but whats happening on many VQ's is more than normal. Our VQ (a 2003 G35 Sedan) also consumes more oil than I feel it should (1/2 - 2/3 quart in a change) but it also has 110,000 miles on it as well and still going strong... Ours is a regular non-rev up VQ35DE, except it makes a little less power than the 350Z's version.

To answer your question, an aftermarket exhaust. I have an '07 and put a Nismo exhaust which I love. It's not too loud but it is louder than the Nismo I had on my '03 Z.
