Clayed my car this past weekend.

This past Sunday I used Mother's clay bar system on my Z. I had never used clay on a car before. Wow, amazing stuff. The paint feels as smooth as glass. Made me into a believer!

It is fairly close to polishing the paint with a fine grit buff compound. Just don't use it too often and it should keep your paint smooth. It is great stuff.

How often would be considered safe to use clay? Once a year? 6 months?

Also, how many times can I use a clay bar before replacing it? Like I said, I'm new to clay.

A small clay should be used ideally just once for the entire car, with folding between areas so you get fresh clay. (ie. stretch and fold)

I wouldn't do it more than once every 2 months with a mild grit, and 6 months with a more serious grit.

That's nuts. One use and toss?

Read the instructions that came with your kit. It will tell you when to toss.

For a small clay. You can tell because when you fold it, the clay won't be entirely clean. That is when it is time to toss.

Your most cost-effective way is to buy a tub of it and just pull out a small bit for each use and throw it out.

Thanks again for the advice. The instructions that came with it suggested storing it in a Tupperware-type container, but didn't say to toss after two uses or anything like that.

Like I said, just keep using until you can't fold it out to clean clay. The first time you clay your car, it will be absolutely packed with junk.

Throw it away if --

- you drop it in the driveway
- it looks dirty
- it ain't soft no more
- it's the first time you ever clayed your car

First time it was ever clayed, so it sounds like it should be tossed.

Thanks again for the advice, guys!

If your cars relatively new and/or you have kept it away from sap, etc. you can use it more than once, imo. I have.

I try to clay bar my cars once a year. It's a great way to get them really clean.
