A/T question
Posted by: cowan
Date: August 15, 2008 04:28AM

Hi to All,

Is it necessary to switch the A/T from "D" position to "N" or "P" during long stops (for example at traffic lights) ?

Max.

No. But that leads to an interesting question of whether do so would give better mileage due to the torque converter losses being slightly less in N. Hummmm...

No. It's an automatic. Just because you can "manually" shift it does not change that
basic fact. As far as that goes, you can "manually" shift any automatic, just not quite the same way.

If I try to take a nap at a traffic light, will I be less tired later in the day?

If you put the transmission in Neutral or Park, yes. If you leave it in Drive, no, because you'll be up an awful long time before, during and after surgery after you roll out into the intersection.

Read your owner's manual and follow the instructions printed there. This forum is for more advanced questions, like how to make 50 more horsepower with V-TEC stickers.

No, you don't need to shift out of drive when you stop. I've never heard of anyone who did this, unless they just wanted to give their foot a rest.

i shift into neutral at lights. red lights are so long in florida people do take naps. sometimes you have to wake em back up when the light turns green.

On a very hot day here in Vegas, I may switch into nutral. That takes the load off the engine and transmission which tends to get hotter waiting for long lights. This also might extend the life of the tranny fluid but probably not by much. This is not necessary though. The cooling system seems very good as I have never seen the temperature guage get close to even half way between cold and hot on the hotest day of the year. Also, the Z uses special automatic transmission fluid which is more durable than the standard bulk nissan tranny fluid.

OK, I'm failing to see how disengaging the clutches and re-engaging them all the time by shifting from N to D will prolong any A/Ts life. Maybe I'm way off base here, but it seems like this would cause more wear and tear over time than just leaving the damn thing in D like you're supposed to.
