Hello,

I'm looking for buy Car PC and I choose from several models:
1. [www.mini-box.com]
2. [logisysus.com]
3. [carcpu.com] (too expensive...)
4. [www.car-pc.tv] (BEST !!!)

But I also think how to fix my laptop. There are special mount, such as: RAM Mount (www.ram-mount.com). Someone set touchscreen display in the console box (front)? Like this: [img187.imageshack.us]

Max.

A good laptop cannot be beat for an in-car PC. The laptops are also good at resisting power failures. Avoid any VIA motherboard+cpu combo, they are too slow for a good in-car PC.

What is the application. I would agree with z32d00d on the Via sh|t, unless you're basically only using it for internet access and music. Any other computing needs and the Via crap won't be sufficient.

I have a small windows xp based box that I made from an intel based micro-atx platform that is basically just set up to store files, provide internet access via my EVDO card, and its connected to a ddwrt based router so that I have internet access pretty much anywhere I can get a Verizon signal and am within range of my WAP with my laptop. Makes it extremely handy when I'm on a jobsite with my laptop and I need my own dedicated internet access or access to important files.

basically the computer I built for my Jeep is a rolling broadband internet hotspot and file server (I do computer, network and telephone system work for a living, it comes in really handy)

It doesn't require a screen mounted in the car because I just use VNC from my laptop if I need to interface with it. It is powered by a small sealed lead-acid battery that is charged either by a small solar panel in the rear window or the vehicles alternator when its running.

You can't get the internet just because you have a PC either. Especially when its in your car, internet can be tricky. I use a Sprint EVDO card for mobile broadband, but its expensive and they cap you at 5GB of bandwidth per month. GPS on a computer is far more difficult to work with than it is on a simple Garmin GPS device. All in all, I think the PC in the car is a cool idea, but I've found it to be not very practical for most things where a standalone device works better. For my needs, I simply NEED a computer and router. But if I could do the same thing without it, I probably would.

Yes, I can buy just GPS, like Garmin or TomTom. But I use AutoMapa-Europe. It's a really cool program with sipmle interface (specially for touchsreens). For internet connection I can use USB-Wi-Fi adapter. It's a difficult, sure.. While this is only my idea, which I would like to implement.

I don't know about Europe, but here in the states wifi is a joke. WiMAX should hopeully help the situation greatly, but what I can tell you for sure is that a USB-wifi adapter will not be adequate for browsing the net unless you are stopped. If your vehicle is moving, it won't work since you'll move out of range of any wireless access point within seconds.
If they have EVDO or mobile phone based broadband internet, that will probably be much better.

this thread is just up my alley. i did my carpc job in my 350z last january (2007).
things i looked at were
1.need for gps
2. ability to have a nice selection of music
3.good size screen so i dont need to squink or wreck (I went 8.4"
4.internet ready
(to elaborate, i use a laptop as the hidden pc, and bluetooth to my pdaphone which has full time unlimited internet so i can keep the cost down as opposed to
going to a separate wlan card and more monthly bills)
5.ability to use computer for other things too.

i have some pics on my myspace. i dont think it needs an account to look at them.

im a computer technician/engineer by day so id be happy to help. i frequent the westsidezmeet.com forum ...thats where you can catch me, but mp3car.com is a nice soure and others doing this in a 350z can also log into my350z.com as well to get some ideas and more pics.
