Some useful information for all you with the crappy stereo blues.

Hi folks,

I can only state this information for the 2007 350Z. I was so disappointed with the stereo in my new 07 Nismo. I am still going to replace it soon, but in the meantime I have some good advice. Take off your speaker covers! Did you know that about 1/2 if not MORE of the speaker cover is solid. It just looks like it has holes! I'm still not finished drilling out the rest of the holes with a 1/16 inch bit but riding around with the covers off really improved the sound! Try it out and please get back to this post with your opinion. I'd really be interested. I don't think it is just in my head. I look forward to your responses. Thanks for looking.

John

This pic was after I started drilling out the holes. It was fun for about the first five then it was just a pain!!!

Wasn't this posted a while back? Either way, thanks for the tip.

CantZmee,

Whooa good eye. Yes, it was posted earlier under the "I can't believe I bought this new car and the stereo sounds like crap" moment that I had. Since then I took the car out for the first time since I removed the grilles. Big sound difference. It's not often I discover something, so here it is.

John Do the grills come off easily? Also, do they reinstall securely? I want to try this myself after I get my car back from the paint shop since I still have the stock bose unit/front speakers. I have already replaced the rears. Last question... Do you notice better frequency responce; bass, treble? Regards, Mike

That looks like a manufacturing mistake, why even have a grill pattern if you plan to keep it enclosed?

Hi folks,

Justin, yes I am eventually (soon) going to replace the souns system. However, taking off the speaker covers sure did improve the sound quite a bit. I would not say I am pleased, maybe just less disappointed. Mike, I gently pryed mine off with a putty knife. Remember this was on an 07, I can't speak to other years. I thought it came off real easy and goes on just as easy. However, I pulled mine off again and left them off for the great hole drilling odessey. And yes, I noticed quite a bit of enhanced frequency response.

When I have the time I'm pulling the rear speakers out. I wonder if the covers there are the same deal. Hardly any sound comes out of the rears.

Let me know what you found.

John

What kind of stereo are you putting in. I have some components that I might be willing to part with. Quality stuff, too.

Damn you have patience my friend.

BOSE has never been a company that has the "high" note frequency.
I have some BOSE 6 sp Direct Reflecting towers with my home stereo and its the same deal.Even with the grilles blocking some of the sound they aren't too bad.

There are always going to be better sounding speakers out there.

Great idea though!

CantZmee,

I am going with my usual formula. A Pioneer head unit with 6.5" infinity component speakers. Then I'm getting an amp to run the 10" Infinity woofer behind the driver's seat. Just don't have the time right now and this is not a job one can rush through (in my opinion). Looking forward to the new stereo.

Cool...so you already have the components. I have two mildly used infinity kappa perfects (10") and an alpine V12 300W amp. Not trying to solicit bids. I can give you my email if you are interested and we can take it offline.

CantZmee,

Thanks for the offer but I'll pass and go with the new stuff. Thanks again.
