New 75 280z owner-hope I didn't overpay...
Posted by: patriotffg32

I recently purchased a 75 280 z from a repo man.i got the title but I hope I didn't overpay.I spent 600 for the car as is.i had to get keys made and buy a new fuel pump (the old pump was dragging on the ground).have not put in the pump yet.I can't find a mechanic near atlanta who who will touch it. The interior lights and the gadjets all work and interior is in decent shape (only small crack on dashboard) I really love the car but I am worried that I might have gotten ripped off. I would seriously appreciate any feedback or if anyone knows a good mechanic near atlanta,ga. thank you

$600 is pretty cheap. If the car runs after you put in the new fuel pump, then you definitely didn't get ripped off. Even if the car is rusted beyond repair, you have at least $600 worth of parts in the car. If it runs and the rust is manageable, then you got a great deal.

Thanks for the response. I can sleep a little easier now cause my wife was not happy when the repo man dropped it off in our driveway. I really wish I knew a good mechanic though. thanks again

Looks like a good deal to me. z car atlanta (google it) is on buford highway, I've never been there. georgiazclub.com, I belong but hardly ever go to the meetings, there's a lot of first-gen owners there who could probably help you out with a mechanic.

Don`t listen to those other guys, they`re just trying to make you feel better. You got screwed!! But I`ll gladly give you your $600 back and take it off your hands.

Seriously though, these cars are easy to fix, you don`t need a mechanic. Just download the FSM and the Fuel Injection Guide(bible) from Xenons and do your own work. You`ll save a lot of money and that will make the wife feel better about the Z.

Second what Ribby says. Do it yourself.
These cars are amazingly easy to work on and the factory service manual that Ribby gave the link to spells things out step by step.

And you did get a good deal.

Thanks for all the responses. I really do love the car and i want to keep it so need to get it running soon. I didn't want to mess things up with the car as I am really not much of a mechanic but if it can save me that much i might just do it myself.

I've been looking at s30's for several weeks using crazedlist.org along with the classifieds here and at HZ. I've seen some really dogged out cars that barely ran and also some rolling chassis cars that looked like crap but the owners were asking a lot more than you paid. That car looks good.
You scored. Trust me on this.

(mechanically speaking) I'm with your wife, so far you paid 600 for a project to be droped in your driveway; check underneath for Cancer B4 even spend on a fuel pump, have someone start the car to see if is a running car or an abandoned POS..and those Christmas lights.. kind of early (ehem)

Thanks for the responses, this is really a cool sight!..yea as far as the christmas lights...I actually got the car last feb (took lights down late)..It has been just sitting there for this long (no room in garage-wife is still pissed) I had a friend come over and look at it right after I got some keys made (that was not easy either) I decide to paint hood black cause it was different color. Then I went out and bought a new fuel pump at advanced auto (pump is different shape/size than the one that was hanging) there were black and green wires hanging down that were obviously connected to the old smaller pump. I thought i could just hook it up and it would start but the wires do not work. everything else like interiors lights/wipers/ac do so i am confused. anyway i decided to take speaker wire and straight wire it off the battery to see if it was the pump or if it was the wires. it was the wires and i got the pump to come on. i took about a foot of hose and stuck in 1 gallon of fresh gas (still has old gas)to see if i could get the car to turn over. the pump worked and gas was shooting out of fuel lines connected to injecters. i had to re tighten clamps on them with screwdriver. the starter is strong and it acted like it wanted to start one time but just very briefly. i thought i had flooded it so i tried again the next day but still no luck. anyway i havent touched the car since.my wife decided to be lazy and put all the stuff from her jeep into the car instead of bringing stuff in so she broke the lock or cable on drivers side. i was super pissed and i didn't touch it for a long time. I really want to get it running and wonder also if it is hard to fix door withought messing up side panels. they are in good shape and i bet they are expensive to replace. anyway i'm real happy to find a site like this and any input will be greatly appreciated, thanks again.

that dash is almost worth what you paid for the car. You made out like a bandit. I know a guy thats trying to sell a 73 240z with a blown motor and in major need of body work and paint for $2500.... Like yeah right!
