Do we spank the country for its birthday or for electing a useless government?

No, we thank them for piping down a massive amount of oil from their oil fields in Alberta, that provides a significant percentage of the fuel that we drive in our American Zs. They also sell power to the upper states.

"According to Oil and Gas Journal (OGJ), Canada had 179 billion barrels of proven oil reserves as of January 2008, second only to Saudi Arabia. The bulk of these reserves (over 95 percent) are oil sands deposits in Alberta, which are much more difficult to extract and process than conventional crude oil. Canada is a net exporter of oil, with 2007 net exports of 1.0 million bbl/d. Almost all of the countries exports flow to the United States, and it is consistently the top supplier of U.S. oil imports."

Those numbers may change. Province next to Alberta (Saskatchewan) is starting to develop their oilsands as well and Newfoundland is gearing up for their offshore oil rigs as well now that the decade long legal issues are settled.

Read the recent National Geographic (well more like look at the pics). I don't care how much oil is in those sands, the environmental consequences are shocking!!

And for those in Quebec who have a provincial government who'd rather you not celebrate the country you belong to, Happy Canada Day!

And have a great St. Jean Baptist celebration and bonfire!

My Pop spent over 5 years traveling to Ft. McMurray working on that project. They were able to transfer some of the technology they developed to clean up the discharge from coal generation power plants to the tar sand extraction process. I read the NatGeo issue. A bit one sided as no mention of my father's work appeared at all. I would dare say the Canadians and Americans are a bit more careful when it comes to the impact on the environment than say... the Russians! No offense Comrade Yorgo.

By the way, O Canada and all that to my northern brethren.

Hell of a lot more careful with regard to environmental impact than the CHINESE, as well, I should think.

Yes and no, they are careful in the publicly viewed areas but there are a lot of negatives as well. Communities with crazy inflated particular illness rates, wildlife deaths (remember the big hoop-lah about 500 ducks landing in an unprotected tailings pond and dying from contamination? The gov'ts response was to remove birds from punnishable offenses if found dead. Not to enforce the existing laws about sound cannons and coverings to keep the birds out (yep, already law that they broke) but to just get rid of the stipulation that the critters must be protected. Nice.

There are at least as many horror stories as good ones from up there.

Happy Canada Day anyway.

Just issue the ducks those little hotel bottles of shampoo and let them take a bath.
