Low Budget + Bad Acting = Good Movie!?, 21 May 2003
Author: fox_muldur from Houston, Texas

After the recent release of "The Fast and the Furious" my faith has been slipping in car movies. "Gone in 60 seconds" had good cars but not enough action. Like most people, I also have little faith in the upcoming movie "2 Fast 2 FURIOUS". The Last Race combines the racing of The Fast and the Furious with the realism of homemade movie street racing.

The main problem with the movie is its low budget - invariably this also leads to a lack of acting skills. The acting by Stephen Sullivan (the main character) is satisfactory but seems forced. The scene between him and his girlfriend is boring and poorly played out. Luis Villalta (Arman) does a better job of portraying the nemesis in the movie but could still use some work. Unfortunately, the character of Jason is very poorly acted. With ridiculous lines like "Hey Barbie, I got a little sumthin'-sumthin' for you" and "you crash my ride @#$%&! you crash my ride!" it is clear he had little to work with.

Along with some mediocre acting the plot suffers as well. Does anybody actually believe that this group of 30-year-old actors is fresh out of high school and about to enter college? It also looks very ridiculous when the "police bust" consists of a single police car chasing several hundred street racers.

Did anybody else notice the similarity between "The Fast and the Furious" scenes in this movie? Both racing scenes are similar: (1) Person A challenges person B (2) Crowd of mechanics suddenly appears around two racers cheering and yelling "ohhhhhh" (3) Person B refuses to race (4) Person A makes witty comment (5) Mechanics laugh and nod their heads in agreement (6) Challenge accepted. The getaway scene is also very similar to The Fast and the Furious with people screaming, throwing their hands up into the air, and peeling out.

So what makes this movie so good? For me it is the realism of how the races were setup. The crew actually invited street racers to be the crowd and arranged several races before and during the filming. This is exactly how races happen in many areas. The last race between the asian racer and Rob is true to the randomness of real street racing. Not the best, but better than Fast and the FURIOUS. I hear there are plans for a sequel, I look forward to seeing what they can do.

Marcus,

That beats the pants off of Fast and the Furious, hands down. It's sad what makes Hollywood these days, but then again the execs know exactly what to push on certain demographics... I got so sick and tired of hearing about those damn movies when I was teaching high school a few years back - I don't think those kids even knew that RWD cars exist, let alone what a Z car was, but I tried to teach them a thing or too and then moved on.. I did my public duty :) is your stroker up and running?

If you mean right after they raced when the guy in the blue Integra gave the dude a head start and still kicked his ass. I think he said 13 second, which is even funnier.

Also, lol at "I wasn't trying last time, I was short shifting."

Maaaan...the Stoker is literally hours away from starting...it's mostly plumbing and some minor wiring... I'm dying a death of 1000 cuts but Sat's supposed to be the day...every step reveals a new problem, so you don't know till you know...but hey, I signed up for this so I really can't biotch (but I can show up @ Sunrise Z everyday and drink all of Art's soda) and man do I need Sourpuss back...we're gettin' spanked in autox.

I've resorted to endless hours of "Grid" and midnight runs in my Gf's 4-door Honda accord (and yes.. I did get a bad rash from the Honda steering wheel)...and I'm thinking of a new reality show called "race your girlfriends car"... where each dude is given $2K to mod his girlfriends car without her permission...race it and then get it back to stock before she finds out...(can you tell I really miss my Z)

...you know I really kind of liked the movie. Yeah the acting is kind of bad, but there are some nice edits and shot compositions and it does flow nicely from scene to scene. The movie doesn't really try to lead a revolution or teach you anything...it's just a short that tries to be true to it's audience (whom I really don't like)...I spent way more on my short and struggled with some of the things he didn't...so had to give him some respect.

Yeah... Fast & Furious has done a lot of damage...and this is obviously influenced by that "movement"...but, they don't know what if feels like to sit in a car that idles with a lopy cam, or the sound and feel of a tuned exhaust when the driver gets on it or the sideways movement of RWD when only one of the tires has traction...one taste of that and they'll forget all about neon colors and vinyls. We just need a film about our kind of cars and our kind of driving...and I think I know the guy to do it :-0

The acting and editing are terrible - they mix together to form a starchy paste that disturbs the upper digestive tract.
