auto sales tax and feathering tires questions
Posted by: Buck

The first question is about trading in a car I financed and paid sales tax on
when bought. Now I am going to trade this car in on a cheaper car but I am getting more for the car that I am trading in than the price of the new car I am going to finance. Can I recoupe some of the sales taxes I paid on the car I am trading in? I know I will at least not owe any taxes on the new car.

The second question is about the 350 z's front tire feathering, which I guess some people say was pretty much fixed in later models. Was it fixed because of the new design RE050 tires they started putting on ? And if not, what tires have people experienced are better at resisting the feathering and/or at least not making such a loud drone when they do wear abnormally ? I was thinking something like the Goodyear Eagle gsd3 (without the large outer individual treadblocks) might be the type of tread pattern to look at ? would appreciate any responses, thanks.

No tax "rebate" as far as I know; each transaction is treated as a separate entity.

Actually they are not treated as a separate entity, they are treated as one deal. But a trade in is not like a return of an item. You have put mileage on and used the vehicle.

Now if you are in a state with a 72 hr cool off then you would get back the sales tax and the entire price of the vehicle if you return before the 72 hour cool off. Not all states have this.

To answer the question no you can not get back the sales tax. And either way you will still owe taxes. just depends on how they take them, because if that money was originally going to go back to you. You would still be out that amount of money.

2 things a guaranteed in life death and taxes.

If you get any sales tax back on this I will dance naked on the white house lawn! LOL!You can however possibly transfer the plates to your new car and save some that way. but you won't get anything back.

Get your taxes back? I almost shat myself when i read that question. Of course not.
One thing you CAN do...if you live in a state (or a "Commonwealth" like where I live), you get to pay what we call an excise tax, fr the priviledge of using the road. If so, you can get an ABATEMENT on the excise tax for the first car, and then you'll get a new bill for the new car, theoretically pro-rated.

Ok, ok, I guess getting any back was a joke ? How about; Will I owe taxes on the new car since I already paid taxes on the car I am trading in ? I am not a business/accounting type of person ! Thanks for any answers.

In most states you will only have to pay sales tax on the difference between the trade in and the total price. So if the price on new car was $10,000 and they gave you $6000 trade in on the car you are trading in then you would pay sales tax on $4,000 .You have already paid the sales tax on the first $6,000 when you bought the first car. If you are trading in the other direction , say you have a car worth $10,000 and are trading it in on a $6,000 car and the dealership is giving you back $ 4,000 than you may not have to pay "sales tax" but there maybe some sort of capital gains tax involved. Either way make sure you keep all the paper work involved in the transaction for state and Federal Tax time.

My bad communicative wording: The sale of the orginal and the present purchase are treated as separate entities; the present purchase and trade in of the original are, as zx toy says, a single entity taxed on the difference in value of trade-in and present purchase, excepting if the trade is worth more than the present purchase you still don't get any tax back, you just pay $0 on the net negative.
