Marine L-28's?
Posted by: 74-260Z

I have lots of spare L28's and too much time.
Has anyone else used an L28 centrally mounted in an 18' ski boat similar to the old wooden Cris Craft?
All I want to do is build the hull and have 100-120HP for easy water skiing.

I was thinking about something along these lines:

back in 72 when i was working at a dealership in Ohio there was a boat manufacturer that made boats very similar to what you are discribing and they used inline nissan engines. never found out if they took off or not.

Do you know how they rigged the drive line (direct, clutched or belt engaged)?
Initially I was thinking of using a 3 seed auto tranny so it would be a single lever control for forward, neutral and reverse. The woodworking on the hull is easy enough to do but I'm still trying to figure out the easiest transmission...

Make a go-kart.

Current Plans:
1991 Stanza: Give it a rally setup with a turbo and 3 coats of POR-15 on the exhaust and undercarriage
1978 Datsun 280Z: Arizona Z suspension, and a turbo...oh yeah and paint...

I did a go-cart last year with a bunch of ZX suspension parts and an L28 with a 5 speed. Now I want a boat...

Here's a boat straight from my imagination:

Two TT L31's mounted to a lightweight boat frame. :)

My brother and I welded it up last summer from spare parts as sort of a joke. C-Channel connecting a front crossmember to the one-piece ZX rear suspension/diffy mount. Add a few cross members and a seat and SCARY FAST fun! Never painted it or took pictures. He's got it now and last I heard was going to finish it out to make it look less redneck...

The VH45 TT speedboat is old news. Check out the VK56 (bored to 6L) QUAD turbo speedboat:

And damn, I was gonna make a whole new thread for that and everything. Oh well.

here before that showed some speed boats using the L series. They had a header mounted upside down and a custom intake. I've seen a few others.

Is that your actual boat?

74-260, thought about a motorbike? Inline 6 would be.... peppy. and with the weight and length, you could either make a lie-on speedbike or a mud bike that would shoot out one heck of a rooster tail!

There was a guy some years ago on E-Bay selling all the fittings from his 2.5 Liter Class Hydro. Aviad Oil Pan, external oil pickup...

John Shewbrooks Racing.

Probably a bit more than what you are looking for, but the same concept.

Frank 280ZX, Myself, 1FastZ and a couple of other guys bought up most of his stock... But I think his webpage might show the setup in more detail

The L4 was more popular, as were the diesels.

OK, Sounds like I need to keep searching for relevant specific info.
Obviously car engines have been used in boats and modded for decades but I was looking for a stocker L28 in a pleasure ski boat. Thanks anyway.

"but I was looking for a stocker L28 in a pleasure ski boat."

So what's the difference? Transmission? They both run a prop outdrive, it's not a jet boat, so the install in John's hydro is almost identical to the Chris-Craft you showed, save for water cooled exhaust manifolds...

I mean, are you going for USCG approved conversion kits, or just someone who put an L Engine into a boat?

Prop or Jet Drive?---once you make the decision, the adapter to the outdrive unit is straightforward.

This isn't rocket science.

TonyD,
It would realy help if you read the request OR ask for clarification.
I asked if anyone used an L28 and asked about transmissions.
I asked about a specific application and gave an example of the type of craft I was looking for.

I did not ask about hydroplanes, L4's, Turbos, VH45 TT's or diesels or jet drives.
That's why I said I'll need to look elsewhere for r e l e v a n t information on such a project.
