AC @#$%!
Posted by: Blue
Date: August 17, 07:03PM

Took my Rav to a local shop here in NJ to get the AC looked at.

They refilled and put a dye in it. 36hrs later it was all gone.

I just bought a black light bulb and had a look-see. Spotted the problem in less than 60seconds. The dryer is rusty and leaking.

Q. If the A/C was leaking so badly, should the shop have seen the problem?

btw I also brought the Rav in for a wheel alignment (especially the rear right that was eating tires). I watch through the window as the so-called mechanic used a box end wrench on the 17mm nut for the control arm ecentric and strip the nut. The work order said "unable to do rear right due to stripped nut"!

WTF?

Did you talk to the manager or owner of the shop? Sometimes, not always but sometimes, they stand behind their work.
If it's a chain, you can often write to head office if the manager is not compliant and get things done through them. Especially if you mention the amount of mechanical work you do yourself on Z's, demonstrating that if you had your garage, you could have done it yourself, but as you didn't...
Head offices generally don't want the bad PR, so will be a bit more reasonable to deal with.
Should have said something right there and then, though.

In Alberta (Easyguy71 should have known this...LOL) the AC tech is required to do a thorough inspection of the system before he installs the refrigerant. In fact, I was charged $39.95 for the check and it was mandatory. If there's a leak, it has to be repaired first. Don't know about the regulations in your state, but sounds to me like the shop should be on the hook.

I'm an eastern bum, remember? Fine, French and imported to the west by the company that wanted me! LOL

Plus, my toys don't have AC. I use the 2-2/60 AC method. 2 windows down, 2 t-tops off and 60mph

At the shop I used to work at, the AC service was done by a machine. The machine would not add refrigerant if it detects a leak.

Blue,

You're in the U.S. now so you must do as we do. Buy yourself a gun (two are better than one) and go in there and blaze away. If anyone tries to stop you, explain that you are looking for weapons of mass destruction. Then shoot them.

See you on the 6 o'clock news!

Incompetence in NJ?

Say it ain't so?!?!?!?!?!

You will be happy to know, Phil, that due to previously unforseen circumstances your Atlantic Z Club Hat you so generously sent me is now residing either in BuHasa UAE, or has made it's way back to India on the head of one Mr. Remanan as a 'Thank You' for both outstanding service, as well as his enthusiasim for motor vehicles...

It was pretty well travelled, and the space between Mr. Remanan's home city outside Mumbai and the border of Bangladesh is about the only place on earth that it has not been...although it may have flown over on that Singapore Airlines Flight from Singapore to Newark or JFK...

So if you are even in Mumbai, don't be shocked to see your hat on someone's head!

A Mechanic was defeated by 1 stripped nut? How hard is it to replace a nut?, even a castle nut. Heat or a nut splitter, cut it off with a Dremel whatever. I say it all the time, I'm no mechanic i know very little about working on cars but a stripped nut? If I was managing a garage of any kind and saw that on a work order I'd flip. Put a wrench in someones dickbeater and call him a mechanic.

Thanks guys I love ya all!

I will lick my wounds and move on...heck I will just have to do the job myself.

The glowing A/C dye reminded me of those old monster models when I was a kid.

Tony I'll try and get some better quality hats for you and your son :) I also have an idea about a large box filled with crispy chocolaty coffee like blocks... maybe even the bite size halloween variety :)

I could've helped you out with the A/C Blue. You have my email if you need. If he was only using the dye as a leak detector then it takes more than the 10 minutes he took for the dye to become visible. I usually Pump it with nitrogen and wait for a pressure drop while I soap all connections first. The dye's really meant for the slower hard to find leaks. Sorry I saw this late. There's a car show by the Jackson outlets this Friday. It may rain though so I'll see when it gets closer. If you still need A/C help let me know. Even if you fix it, you can come by and use my vacuum pump etc to recharge it. Rich
