Well, as in a weird chance, I may have the opportunity to purchase a 2008 frontier engine and 5-speed auto transmission, with engine management and wire harness. I know similar swaps have been done before with the 3.5 engines, I've got a shop back home that is willing, and I've nothing but time and money while I'm deployed. Here's my question: will this engine and tranny be a good swap into the ZX, or should i keep waiting along for a 350Z engine and auto transmission to come along?
No one, as far as I have heard, has done it. I asked about it a while ago when I had a 2007 Frontier. The deck height on the VQ40DE is higher than the VQ35DE (which has been done). I'm sure the oil pan is deeper too. With a custom oil pan and a cowl hood, I'll bet it will fit though. There are aftermarket parts from Stillen for the Frontier including a supercharger. Stillen has a 400+ HP Frontier as their test vehicle. I think that would do well enough in a ZX.

Tony, that's a valid option too, there are plenty of those collecting dust back in my home town.... aaand the gears are turning. I wonder if this is what they meant when they told me I wouldn't save much money while deployed?
