Welcome Toyota to the #1 auto maker
Posted by: wannaBREz

GM went on strike today at 11 am. They only have 1 month of cars, and 14 days of trucks ready for shipment to be sold. IMHO, they are pretty much done.

Any GM workers here?

GM is bleeding red ink like a stuck pig -

And the Union is on strike - why?

Something about job security? Ah - great way to secure your job.

Make sure they can't sell the product to go further in the hole.

Well GM has been showing a profit recently, but the Union is desparate right now, they know they have no leg to stand on anymore, so they resort to a strike...

Some of the new GM cars coming out are really awesome IMO, they have been doing a good job of turning around.

Thats kinda funny, my sister was tempted to buy a pontiac sunfire tonight, used with 17,xxx miles. The price at the dealership was $16,000. They dropped it down to $10,900. hmmmm, I agreed with my dad and decided thats still a bit high considering it was the very basic version; and had quite a few scrapes and dings. Well she just downright didn't want it. I told her theres an 86 turbo 300zx for sale here in wisconsin. If I had the $2500 I would buy it. She laughed at me haha

She's still looking for a car, I told her to buy a honda or toyota and spend the extra money for it. You get what you pay for

Maybe GM is going down the hole, but that would be really really bad news for alot of people/the enconomy. Surely it won't

Its not just GM going down the toilet, its the USA that is also. The whole damn country is beginning to suck in every way imaginable. Take a look at Los Angeles, in 10 years its gonna be like that all over. Too bad, but its been a long time coming...

Just cause Toyota is #1 doesn't mean ill buy one. McDonalds is also #1 but I don't eat that crap either.

I'm 56 and have been hearing that all of my life. My father said that and his father before him (not about GM).

As the historians say about the American Revolution - if it was sucessful or not. "It's too early to tell".

GM can only last about 7 days right now before they are back in the red. They dont have a Billion dolors to their name, and losing 100 million a day isnt helping.

I think GM is tired of being a pension and benefits company, I think they want to get back to being a car company. And I hope they do, because I am eying that new G8.

Ive heard rumors of line workers getting $45/hour plus benefits (which by the way are very very good). Is there any truth to this?

Does anyone belong to the UAW here?

Rumors? Line Workers...

"Ive heard rumors of line workers getting $45/hour plus benefits (which by the way are very very good). Is there any truth to this? "

I can tell you that the two skilled tradesmen I worked with at the Ford Truck Plant outside Romulus (Wayne Truck Assembly) both made over $100,000 Gross a year including overtime. The Pump Repairman that was my Union Liason (Contractors are required by work rules to have a Union Worker with them on Trades Jobs, wether they know anything about the machinery or not...) ran it down to me:
He worked every day, Monday thru Friday 12 hours a day. This had him at 3000 hours a year, not including his two week paid vacation. He did not work weekends, he did not work over 12 hours a day. His minimum compensation the prior five years was $102,000. His taxation rate was at around 2% due to his sheltering of his income in investments.

The second Skilled Tradesman (again, a Pump Repairman) was a Russian Immigrant that had been in the country about 10 years. He loved America, and he loved coming to his job, he came in to work EVERY DAY but did not work ANY overtime (save for his weekend time, which was 1.5X on Saturday, and 2X on Sunday, as well as other contract related premiums for holidays, etc...) he showed me his paycheck on the 30th of June, which if anybody knows, that is the 1/2 way point through the year. From that paycheck, if you continue working at a similar pace the entire year, you will double that paycheck. His read $54,000 at that point, so he was into Ford for about $108,000 a year.

Granted, these were skilled trades and they get paid more than line workers, but the average line worker at that time was easily hauling down $70,000 a year.

Oh, did I mention this was 1994?

OH, and just one other thing to mention....In Japan the Average Line Worker Surpassed the UAW Contract Compensation Schedule in pay sometime around 1984. The average Korean Line Worker Exceeded the UAW bretheren in pay about three or four years ago. It costs more to produce cars in their own country that it does to produce them here! That is why Toyota, Nissan, and Hyundai all made factories here, and STILL import their LUXURY lines from overseas. Higher paid workers with better skillsets reserved for making LUXURY vehicles, while the everyday bread and butter models are made with Cheap American Labor.

But you won't hear the UAW telling their Stooges on the line those little facts. And the first thing they will retort is about 'pension and benefits'...but you will see the lie there soon enough as well!

An article about the strike stated that most of the line workers went from an average weekly paycheck of around $1300 down to $200 union strike compensation.

OUCH, and just how long can most paycheck to paycheck workers afford to keep groceries on the table, new cars in the driveway, and the huge mortgage current on $200 a week ??

If this isn't a short strike, it will be a crippling one for the company, it's reputation, and it's workforce, not to mention the economy.

"OUCH, and just how long can most paycheck to paycheck workers afford to keep groceries on the table, new cars in the driveway, and the huge mortgage current on $200 a week ??"

Pretty Damn Long if they have any sort of logic to their thinking. I bought my house with the VERY THOUGHT that my Unemployment Compensation will be around $800 a month, Gross. My food bill is fit within that, as well as mortgage payment.

That my wife works, well...that never came into the calculations so stability should I loose my job is assured.

Doesn't take a lot of forethought.

But then again, the Joneses next door have that new boat, and I can't live in a Mobile Home, it's GOTTA be 3400+ Sq Ft...

"Simplify" people, and you will be amazed how little life's tumbles really affect what matters in life!

BTW, note that the $1300 they state is around $67,600... Not really 'paycheck to paycheck' territory in about 98% of the country! And pretty damned close to my SWAG number of $70K as well!

These people have only themselves to blame if they run into financial difficulties.

My friend Drew is off now related to this fiasco. "Job Security" huh? Does that mean perpetuation of the "Job Bank" so they can pay people to sit on their butt at FULL pay endlessly awaiting the 'callback' to line work that never comes?

Open your eyes UAW: The jobs, once gone from your facilities ARE NOT COMING BACK! The market share is dwindling. Cut your deadwood, and focus on SUSTAINABLE employee numbers. Crap, just raise their union dues to make up for the volume shortfall. What are they going to do...quit the union? I guess the NLRB Decision to let them do that hasn't made it up to your bulletin boards at the facilities yet, huh?
