RE: everybodys "list" of cars to own.? (

Chrome, I got your reply from the tech post on being a Stang owner. Unfortunately my ponies are gone with two kids and a mortgage. I did have a 82 Mustang 5.0 4 spd that I bought all on my own as my first paid off car back in 1990 (I was making payments on a Pontiac Grand Am at the time, ouch). I then sold the 82 (and forgot to take my radar detector out of the dashboard and gave back the extra $100 cash the guy paid me by accident in the process...) and bought an 85 GT 5.0 4 bbl with Holley carbs. Man, it was sweet and smooth as it was the last of the carb'd Stangs. It was white with black trim and the only "flaw" in it was it didn't have the T-tops. My dream car at the time was the one my classmate had which was a gloss black 85 5.0 GT with T-tops and tan interior. I couldn't afford it after graduation even though he wanted only like around 5 G's for it (plus I just got married). So I bought the 82 in Cali for $3K, sold it, then bought the 85 for $3K. Back in Chicago, I eventually sold it to a kid in Wisconsin for $2700 after all the work I put into it and he felt like it was Christmas in July.
When I got out of the military, my buddy took his 944 Porsche and I took my 85 GT from California back to sweet home Chicago and we cruised (and raced) on Route 66 and I40. My 5.0 pretty much kept up with him. It was a great adventure too. We made it in 2.5 days and got a warning from a cop in the process, got kicked out of the hotel in Albuquerque in the morning (around 4AM to get an early start) because I was revving my engine due to carb problems due to the altitude and then my throttle got stuck! Luckily, I wasn't in gear or my Stang would have checked into our hotel room. Ha! ha! I only had like 4 hours of sleep in 2.5 days (never, ever will I do that again) as I almost ended up in the desert embankment had my friend not waken me up alongside and fired his horn at me.
Anyways, sorry for the story, but it brought back great memories. The two stangs were the only interesting cars I've owned other than this 260Z I'm working on. Chrome, your list reminded me a little of my dad's. My dad had an interesting list which included a Corvair, Pontiac Tempest, Pontiac LeMans, Oldsmobile Delta 88, Plymouth Valiant, some Brit car called the Hunter, another Pontiac LeMans (white interior!), 84 Pontiac Grand Prix V8 (sweet), Dodge Dart, Plymouth Volare, 79(?) Mustang Grande, AMC Pacer, Buick Sportwagon, Chevy Caprice Wagon (I got my license with this boat). There were others but the fact I picked up this Z he was reliving his youth through me (he's 70). I just ordered my first set of replacement parts from Courtesy Nissan today, so once I get that tank leak fixed, he and I are going to rock and roll!
As far as the cars I want to own (which was the purpose of this post in the first place), maybe realistically, someday I can get a BMW 328 Cis (see July Motor Trend) with the manual transmission. I love the ergonomics. I believe it's a fine mix between class and sport. My dream car is the Dodge Viper Coupe, nuff said. I also gave up my Honda Nighthawk for my Z, so I'd like to also get a bike again one day. My wife and I are wrestling as the only bike she'd let me own again is a Yamaha Virago or some other cruiser but I want a crotch rocket (Yamaha R1, Honda CBR, Kaw Ninja, etc.). But for now, all the focus is on the Z until I loose interest, make no progress, or find some other hobby. If I do make progress on this project, and with the help of this forum and others, it could be a long relationship. Maybe longer than this post...later guys...enjoyed this thread.
