Been doing a little reading, nothing quite gives me a straight answer. Im wondering if there is a way to check the vtc gears while the cars is already tore down to that point? In other words its not running so I cant listen for them. Any ideas?

a bad VTC gear will piss oil out of the riveted seal on the side facing the head. check that area for spattered oil.

EDIT: this would be a bad VTC gear, notice the "inside" of the teeth area has oil in it. the area with the keyway is supposed to be oily, outside of that should be dry.
