Rattling Noise

After replacing the timing belt on the newly aquired 90TT i purchased. i noticed a loud rattling/tapping noise coming from under the drivers side plenum, just behind the timing belt cover. The noise comes and goes. After searching i suspected the VTC, but when i unplugged the harness (as seen in the video) there was no change. I replaced the VTC springs and o-rings when i did timing belt. Doesnt sound like lifters to me...what do u guys think?

Sounds like abad vtc gear. Unplugging the harness doesn't do it, you need to engage it with program or ground out the connection manually.

yeah that definitely is a bad VTC gear. people have been telling me it resembles a diesel motor when they go out. pick up some BDE rebuilt units and call it a day.

Can anyone explain why the noise or bad vtc gear only presented itself after i replaced the timing belt and vtc springs?

Double check the bolts holding the gear to the camshaft. On my passenger side exhaust cam three of the four bolts backed out and the fourth was very loose. The tb cover was keeping them in place. It sounded similar to what you have. Just something to check.

it would have presented itself as a result of the new stronger springs. the gear is probably old and warn out and since your old springs had warn with it, it wasnt enough pressure.

Ok thanks guys...so at this point my options are... buy rebuilt set for $475 or just buy the drivers one used from Z1 for $150. Is there a high % the passenger side fail soon as well? Any suggestions?

Kinda sounds like the T-belt might be loose. They rattle pretty loud with too much slop.
