Questions on Rear Wheel Bearing Replacment.

Here are a few.

How do I get the axel shafts out of the hub. Remove big a$$ nut and pound on the end (nut in place for thread protection)? Do I need to unbolt half shafts from diff?

Then. According to this post, "use puller to remove hub from bearings while knuckle is still on car." This is the first time reading about this method. How do you do it Ballistic? Slide hammer. Three jaw. What do you grab and what do you push adgisnt.

Most post say to take to shop and have it pressed out. As per the FSM.

And man that e-brake mech is some crazy @#$%&.

Tried both my three and two jaw puller. Broke both with no results. Sucks.

Your best bet it to unbolt the wheel bearing from the knuckle and take it to a local machine shop. The will be able to press the hub out of the bearing and into the new one.

Doing it yourself will require special tools and if it isn't pressed together enough or too much the bearing will wear out again quickly.

If you want to tackle it your-self here are some tools you will need.

Removal:
Puller
If Outer race is stuck on Hub:
Cuttoff wheel
Chisel

Installation:
Bearing press or Stand Press

When using the puller set; the bearing has to be pulled off the hub. Not the hub pulled off the bearing. It will have to be setup on the backside of the Bearing/Hub assembly.

Once off the outer race will likely stay on the hub, so try and use the puller again to get the race off. If you cannot get a good grip then you need to score the race using the cuttoff wheel(being careful not to scar the hub) and use the chisel to split the race. Once split it will come off pretty easy.

Check the hub for damage, the race surface should be smooth(a little surface rust is fine). If it isn't and it looks scared then the hub MUST be replaced.

When pressing the hub into the new bearing make sure the press is only applying force to the inner race and the hub. If the force is being applied to the bearing casing then the bearing can be damaged. While pressing them together once the press gets hard and the parts stop moving then STOP. If you continue the bearing can be damaged.

There the hard part is done!!

Put the bearing/hub assembly back in the car and make sure the axle nut is torqued correctly, Improper torque can damage bearing.

I still need to remove the axle.

Tip or details on that.

I don't think i am going to deal with the pressing of the hub/bearing.

Have you soaked the hub/axle with some penetrating spray?

From my experience soak it then use a hammer to break it free. On my N/A, which has the early 89 bearing, it took alot of work to get the axle to break free. Don't worry about unbolting it from the diff, the axle will move a lottle more than an inch before it bottoms out, by that point it should be pretty easy to slide the hub off.

Thanks that is what I remember. I soaked once. But that was more for the nut. Now that it is removed I'll soak again. Pull out my biggest hammer...

Lets see...

I removed the axle halfshaft bolts, then the big axle nut and washer.Remove some of the suspension arms to allow the hub to swing outward. Next, I plug in my air compressor and use one of those pneumatic chisel ($10 harbor freight specials) with the bit thats shaped like a dull pencil. This thing will fire the axle out of the hub ever so easily without damage or strain.

Oopps, my mistake, Bill...I forgot that I used the air chisel to get the axles out.

BTW, partsamerica.com has the rear wheel bearings for half of what Nissan wants. I had a picture of them somewheres on line ...heavy duty units just like OEM.
