Hey guys...

Three or four times lately my clutch has slipped in 4th gear on high boost pulls. It has always happened when it is cool out, high pressure front in place. The thing is, centerforce (centerforce dual friction clutch) assures me that this clutch will handle in excess of 500 ft lbs of torque. The clutch seems to be adjusted properly, it starts to engage about two inches off the bottom. I guess I wouldn't think that my car is producing enough torque to slip it. .040 over, mild porting, 555's, gt2560R BB turbos, big TB's, 3 inch DP's and exhaust, ported exhaust manis, dual intake, lightened flywheel, UD pulley, 1 piece driveshaft, Ash generic ECU tune, 18.5 lbs of boost. Is it possible for this setup to make enough HP and torque to roast that clutch? I guess I am just wondering if I should replace it, or look at something else? thanks!

First off, are you sure it's the clutch that's slipping and not just wheel slip? Do the RPMs climb but the speed-o reads roughly the same? If so, then you do have clutch slippage.

Personally I've never really had much luck with the Centerforce Dual Friction clutches in higher HP applications. They always seem to be a bit over rated by Centerforce.

It is also possible that the clutch surface is glazed over. This could be due too improper break-in.

If you say that you have sufficient free play and the clutch is adjusted properly, then pull the clutch and see. If it's not an adjustment problem then I don't know of any other "fix" without having to pull it.

My guess is you'll need a better clutch though. DxD and RPS are high on my list of cost effective clutches that work. ACT and JWT will work too, but not quite as cost effective.

It might be. I have have almost the same setup as you do, but I have 740cc injectors. I had a Z1 TT street clutch and flywheel that Z1 said would hold 550lbft, and the same thing would happen. On cold nights the car would make a bit more power and the clutch would slip in fourth gear. I had to change to a six puck disk to bring the holding power up i bit. I have not had one slip sense.

My centerforce got slippery as it got old. It wouldn't even hold stock HP at one point, even though the clutch still had a lot of life left when I swapped it for RPS.

Definitely. You have to watch the speedometer and tachometer, if they are moving together, you're getting wheel slip. If just the tach is rising, your clutch is slipping.

Yes! It's very possible to get wheel slippage without any burning rubber sounds.
