What a difference... (250k maintenance update)

...new wheel bearings make. Since about March/April I've had a little noise in the car. It felt like an unbalanced tire. I put new tires on and the noise was still there. The noise progressively worsened to where I would "feel" a crunching noise at highway speeds.

Well, as part of my 250k maintenance, I am going through and replacing all the wheel bearings and ball joints.

I used this write-up
[twinturbo.net] The only thing that I would change about that write-up for rear wheel bearings is

-Remove the wheel
-Remove the caliper (two 17mm bolts)
-Turn the little plug in the rotor to the 6 o'clock position and take a flat head screwdriver and turn the little gears downward. The rotor should slide off easily
-Remove the parking brake shoes and springs (be sure to take note how all the little springs go
-On the backside of the hub is a 10mm nut that is holding the parking brake cable to the hub. Remove it
-Get your breaker bar and 27mm socket out and loosen the big nut on the top back part of the hub ( Mine was on incredibly tight...and so I reccommend doing this step BEFORE you start removing the suspension from the hub...especially if you dont have a vice nearby)
-Remove the cotter pin from the center of the wheel hub. Then take your breaker bar and 36mm socket and remove the big axle nut from off the axle.
-Use a puller and connect it to the part of the wheel hub that has the wheel studs in it. Pull the hub out of the wheel bearing. You can do this step afterwards, but it is so much easier to do while on the car
-Remove all of the suspension arms (17mm&19mm) off the hub. Tilt the hub foward and use a 22mm box wrench to free the nut off of the lower balljoint. The hub should come off the car.
-There are 4 19mm bolts holding the wheel bearing onto the hub

It all may sound like alot of wrenching, but it isnt. After you do the first one, you will fly through the 2nd under an hour.

My P-side front wheel bearing was bad about a year ago, It was making noise like you said yours does, mine also made the car pull to the right, I replaced it and no pull and no annoying noise!

Im here because I dont have any real life friends.

One question :

Were you able to note obvious play, or anything else suspicious in the hub before you did this fix ?

Also, thanks for being so encouraging about the prospect of wrenching off those big nuts. I always get a little anxious at the thought of tackeling those big ones !

B - I'm planning on doing mine this winter. Can't be too careful when driving cross-country again next summer.

No play at all. I'd jack the car up and shake the wheel. I guess it gets like that when they are in real bad shape. I would just feel this crunching that was coming from the right rear.
