7 speed transmission
Posted by: Archduke

I am new to the auto trannys in the ZCARS. I have felt some "abrupt" shifts when slowing down and also when speeding up. I was not pushing the car in either instances. I was wondering if this was a quirk of the 7 speed trannys or just a normal function? I haven't experienced it more than a couple of times but it was noticeable. I only have 1100 miles on the car so maybe it is part of the break in period?

7 gears IMO is excessive. It just adds extra shift points which aren't necessary. Obviously it is going to shift more often if it has more gears that fall into the "normal driving speed" ranges.

Archduke, sounds like you got your situation worked out with that back surgery and the 370. Glad to hear that turned out OK for you and you didn't have to ditch the car.

Besides these abrupt shifts, how do you like the 7-speed with the paddle shifters? I've only read one short review on a 370 with the 7-speed, in Super Street, I believe. Most everything else I've read has been focused on the 6-speed with the new rev-match setup.

The 7 speed seems to be very impressive and is as quick if not quicker than the manual gearbox. It also has the rev-match feature. I agree with phxZ31 that 7 gears is too much. 6 gears would have been better, but I'm guessing they went with 7 to improve gas milage. If I was in the market for the new Z I would have to at least test drive the auto, which wasn't even a possibility with the older auto.

My back has been healing well but not as quickly as I would like, no golf LOL. The paddle shifters take a little getting used to moreso on the down shifts. Especially, from 2nd to 1st. I have missed the down shift a couple of times and the tack really jumped. Overall the quickness of the car is close to the 6 speed but not as much fun. One exception is in rush hour traffic, then the 7 speed is a winner.

I thought the manual tranny had the rev matching? If the auto does too that might explain the tack jumping. Egg on my face lol.

If you are downshifting to 1st that would explain the rough shifts. You don't need to downshift to 1st unless you come to a complete stop.

Rev matching is nothing new for an auto transmission. There are many that already have this feature. The reason syncro-rev match is such a big deal is because it's the first manual transmission to rev match for you.

Stay away from golf until that back is healed up for sure! Z33Driver, I don't think I was aware that the 7-speed auto had the rev-match feature too. Like you said something to think about it you looking at a Z34.

Hi... I'm new to this forum. I'm prepping for the 2010 40th anniversay Z.
I've had the pleasure of having a few hours of test drives in the 7.
I'm so in luv with this automatic. I've never experienced an auto like this.
Yes it does have 1 to many gears but its livable.
The amount of torque this tranny gives out is awesome. Totally feels like a manual on the paddleshift. (Minus the 3rd pedal)
This transmission is imo the best of both worlds without a doubt. It really sparks my curiosity on so called "more upscale" manumatics such as "PDK" and "DSG".

Welcome.

I recently test drove the 7 speed auto and was very impressed. The @#$%& were fast and smooth. The paddle shifters were cool and provide the feeling of a manual. The rev matches were perfect. I know it's not a dual clutch transmission but the shifts were very fast and I would have time keeping up with the 7 speed in the manual.

I knew it was a bad idea to go test drive the new Z because I wanted one before driving it. Now I want one even more. I also thought there was no way I would enjoy an auto in a sports car, but was pleasantly surprised by the 7 speed auto. During the test drive I forgot all about the seventh gear, too many gears. Good job Nissan, they hit a home run with this car.

DRM- downshift rev matching actually began in the 350z, altima and maxima around
05 or 06 in automatic transmissions. It was designed to give the manual mode a more aggressive true manual like feel and also aid in proper downshift blipping in these autos. Detecting the exact moment to downshift in the manual mode is a lil more difficult as it was less precise. DRM narrowed the gap and matched manual performance. Within 3 years of invention, DRM has exceeded performance making autos way more desireable.

SRM- syncro rev matching. Is the same concept as DRM, but to aid in the most complex of manual maneuvers. Heel and toe. SRM is meant to do the same in the manual. Now u can buy a manual virtually as precise as an auto with DRM.
10 years ago... this would have never been possible. As manuals were superior performance transmissions.

Now ferrari's and porsche prefer making auto performance cars because u can make several different programmable driving modes, throw on a paddle shift and/or auto stick, mode selector switch n get 4 driving styles in one car :)
I hoped I helped?
