28WHP from an intake!!!

That's right, it wasn't a misprint. The Stillen G3 cold air intake made 28whp on an independent dyno, while also adding 13 pounds of torque.

I guess it's a lose/lose situation for Nissan. Make a car that won't see much improvement by aftermarket parts, and upset enthusiasts who like to mod their cars; or make a car that does respond to aftermarket parts, and have people say the stock parts are poorly designed. Even with their, "poor design" they are able to compete with cars that cost twice as much, not too bad IMO.

I didn't mean to sound overly negative, but from my POV, a simple tubing and filter change should NEVER result in 28whp. The typical 2-3hp difference you usually see means that Nissan did a good job, and their stock equipment is well designed. However to gain 28whp means that the engine itself is now producing almost 50hp more than stock, and that means something isn't right with the stock setup...

Regardless of whether or not the stock system is competitive, this is showing (to me at least) that the car should come rated at around 360hp, not 333.

Plus, nobody ever really expects a difference of 28whp from a simple filter/tubing change. Riceboys claim such things and people usually laugh (hence the irony from the title of the thread above this). When riceboy math actually works out, that means the components that Nissan designed to support this engine are holding it back.

The simple fact of the matter is that there's no difference between the 370Z intake from Stillen and the 350Z HR intake. Its the same filters and tubing, but the difference it makes is comparatively huge.

This is very interesting...Nissan obviously does not have incompetent engineers that cannot design a decently flowing intake...if this power gain is true I would suspect that the "poor design" is a clever subliminal marketing device to get the consumers excited about the potential of simple modifications.

Either that or the intake was designed on a Monday...

Cool gains if it's true and no Dyno tricks have been applied....How exactly can you service these without removing your front bumper every time?

Unfortunately you have to remove the bumper to service the filters.

Gang,

Let me add this to the mix of poor design (Maybe). Back in the muscle car days Chevrolet built a Corvette (and some Chevelles) that had a 427 with 3 Carbs on it. It was rated at 435 HP. Now all of us back then thought that was one bad boy and it had three deuces (3 two barrel Carbs) on it. WOW. Chevrolet sold the hell out of these guys. Now the guys in the know stood off to the side and just laughed at us. But they wouldn't tell us why they were laughing. Chevrolet also built a single 4 barrel 427 called the L88 that had a advertised Horsepower of 430 HP. Well who wanted a wimpy single four motor when they could have a 3X2 motor. What Chevrolet did was lie to everyone so the insurance people back then wouldn't have a clue about what this motor really did in the HP department.... Actual SAE Gross Horsepower of this monster was 550 to 570. So the point that I am trying to make is that sometimes Engineers and the OEM for what ever the reason don't always tell everything. They let you find it out on your own.................

Agreed. Remember, Nissan also makes these cars for people that DON'T like to hear their intake or exhaust when they drive down the highway. That requires some significant compromises in order to keep sound to a MINIMUM.

It also creates a situation where we can take advantage of their compromise, have a little more "sound" and make big improvements over the stock setup.

What about cleaning or replacing the air filters? You have to take the bumper off each time? Sounds kind of silly... Curious, how hard is it to remove the bumper?

I'm sure you can probably just take off the plastic liner on under the bumper and reach up to get them out without actually removing the bumper.
