Re: RB25DET in my 88 Z31 56K warning

For most z31 owners, the biggest factor in determining what engine they are going to run is

1) How much is it going to cost.

2) How easy is it going to be to install.

No one is denying that the RB is a stout motor, but for the amount of money you spent on purchasing it, and the hassle of having to fabricate/purchase just to get the engine into the car and connected, You could have a VG of equal power with much less difficulty.

You can probably get the VG to 400whp with that $3000 you spent on just the engine, but it's your money.

I wish you well with the swap and would love to see some dyno #'s after your done.

Watch this video, and you will see why the RB is so appealing..heheh.
Check THIS out

I don't agree 100% with putting an RB in a 300, but if you have the time, money, knowledge, and the urge to have something different, then go for it.

Isn't the RB30 only an SOHC? Not that it makes much difference in the grand scheme of things. But it is SOOOO much harder to come by since it was only released in Australia IIRC.

And we were talking about the RB vs VG. Not anything about the SR, KA, CA, VH, VQ, VK, SBC, SBF, 2JZ, etc.

But seriously, good luck with the project. I really want you to do it. I want someone to finally do it (not pay a shop to do it for them). I would love to see a writeup.

And I've met Jason. And yes, his car is nuts.

Thanks for the link. However the O-ring is not needed at all. The RB20DET pickup does not have a groove machined into it. Do you know of anyone who used this company?

The wheels are from a 2000 Mitsu eclipse. 17x7 with 1" spacers all the way around. They will just bolt on however the offset looks horrible. Also with the mitsu's they have a collar built onto the lugnut. I thought about changing the studs, but none were available that would fit properly on our hubs. Anyhow they work great without the collared lugnuts. I just torque em to 125 Ft/Lbs.

On the front I have Michelin MXMV4 225/45R17, and ont the rear I have Goodyear RS-A 215/55R17. When I bought the wheels they had matching tires, but then my g/f borrowed the car and hit a pothole, blowing out one tire. I know I should have the thinner tire on the front, but the goodyears I got for free and were choppy. Also the two back rims are bent on the lip, I dont want those two rims on the front. Vibration purposes.

I was really suprised when I changed the wheels out, the old 15's with 215/60's weigh almost as much as the 17's. Mitsu's are notorious for having heavy factory wheels.

Yes the RB30 is a SOHC however with a little machining the RB26 head will work. Cost under 300 bucks. There are a couple drag skylines in the US running RB30's one is deep into the 8's. Also nismo sells this block to anyone with the money.

That is awesome, good to hear that his car is crazy. By looking at his site it looks like he knows what he is doing. I read about his coilover setup and am planning on using his idea and improving on a few things for my car. Mailny the rear mounts.
