Brake Cables
Posted by: Realsilverfish

I was wondering if someone could tell how the brake cables for the 300z are set up. A mechanic who looked at my car a few weeks ago said I needed new brake cables, thing is my e brake doesn't work. So is it all the brakes are connected by one cable or are there multiple cables? I looked on autozone and they carry 1 brake cable. Any help would be great.

Download the FSM for your year z31, and look there. I'm sure it contains all the info you'll need in order to answer your question. [www.xenonz31.com]

There are multiple cables, but only one going to the actual hand brake lever. It then splits off and goes to the two rear wheels. Theres a simple adjustment bracket near the split that you use to tighten the cable so the brake works again.

there is a short cable going to the right rear(pretty sure it was right but either way it is a short cable) from where the adjustment apparatus is located. the other one is just one piece (I think) going to the handbrake lever. I had to replace the short one and that is what it looked like to me.

I'm not entirely sure but when I looked under my car I saw a cable hanging and I wanna say thats my problem. Should I just buy new cables for all my brakes?

you could but might be pricey unless you find one in a junker. from posts I've read over the years seems like that short guy is the culprit most of the time. the one I replaced looked really good from the outside but was jammed up inside. ran every cleaning solvent/lubricant known to man though the thing and couldn't free it up. The one I got from a junker that looked like well! junk was free and easy. Just get under there and look. maybe it just got so loose it came free somehow and just needs to be put in place.

Get the car up on jacks and look at it from underneath. Don't just go buying parts unless you actually need them. If the adjustment bracket came apart and thats the only problem, you can probably fix that in about 20 minutes including the time it takes to jack the car up and then bring it back down.

I'll defininitly do both before buying anything. Maybe it just came loose after all. Thanks for the help.
