Big bang theory

Hi guys, I've been without internet and miss the help. For about 2 to 3 months I've noticed that when I'm on a road with some grade the trans will act a little bit like the cluth is slipping, like worn clutchs do in manual transmissions. I was driving my automatic 87'turbo one night and heard a k-bang. The trans was in drive then suddenly there was no response when I tried to maintain the speed I was traveling. I put it in neutral immediatley and coasted about 20 yards and proceeded to stop then the engine died. After I came to a stop I tried to start the car. The starter turned but sounded different and the engine did not engage. What happened? Should I try to see if the engine is locked up, and how would I do this? How would I test the trans to see if it's gone?

Pull the trans off and investigate. Check the flywheel, check for leaks, and check for debris. I wouldn't think the motor is locked, I would say the trans is what is keeping the motor from turning over.

Sounds like it could be the engine or the transmission. My guess by the sound of it is that the transmission took a @#$%& on you...

Pull the dipstick out of the tranny and see where your oil level is and what the condition of the fluid is. Dark/brown color and a burnt smell will probably confirm that the transmission is toast. Pinkish/red fluid is usually OK.

If the transmission oil appears fine, then try turning the engine over by hand with the car parked and the transmission in neutral. You should be able to tell if the engine has seized. Also, I would pull the starter off and check to make sure the ring gear is still in tact and that nothing is stuck in the starter gear.

On the Big bang theory, I've checked the trans fluid and it's okay, the engine oil is okay and the starter turns the motor. I've also checked the fuel pump and filter and gas is getting past the fuel filter. On instrutions from Chilton, Haynes and FSM starting the engine appears to be the only way to use the ecu for diagnostics. What can I do to find out why the engine won't start? I'm down both cars (88'with fuel smell as gross polluter, and now 87'with engine won't start) and now I'm walking! Help....
