Here's a link to some video I shot of a customer's AE radio unit that I just repaired, including operation, reproduction button covers, and a peek inside:

Nice.

So you take in Z31 radios for repair, or just local friends, etc?

Website?

I take them in for repairs. PM me. I do not currently have a website.

How long does it usually take you to repair the radios? Amazing job by the way.

I takes about two weeks from the time I receive it to repair, bench test, and send the radio back out. I work on them in the evenings and weekends only as I have a full-time job. Thanks for the compliment - I appreciate it.

thank you for your great info. i have a radio from an 86 with the graphic equalizer and it turns on and off. sounds like a cap but im just wondering if there is a specific place to look? it seems to work if you get it on a good day.

More than likely, it's a cold solder joint somewhere (although bad capacitors are always a possibility). PM me.

Props to you for taking the care to repair the stock unit for yourself and others instead of going the easy route...I rebuild vintage solid state receivers as a hobby/weekend business and can certainly sympathize with the amount of time it takes to do this...I pretty much default to replacing all electrolytic and tantalum capacitors because if they haven't failed already they probably will sooner or later...

Its nice to be able to work with the smaller units as parts are generally cheaper when compared to some of the beastly vintage recievers I work with (with 22,000uf capacitors running at 230v!!)...but the tight packaging of automotive units certainly can be a pain! I was thinking about rebuilding the stock unit in my '78 soon just to try to squeeze as much sound as possible from it...its nowhere near as complicated as the 50th AE unit but should be an adventure regardless.
