Gear oil

So when I installed my new tranny a while back in my 85 2+2 I spilled a bit of gear oil on the case of the tranny and the exhaust. The tube slipped out of the hole when I was pumping (bring on the jokes hehe) I figured it would just burn off after a few drives. Well I've drove about 500 miles since and its still burning/smoking. Its a very strong smell that I just can't put up with anymore. Do you guys have any ideas on how I can clean it all up. I was thinking just some degreaser and towels? Thanks guys

Test out a non-flammable degreaser on the gear oil you used, then put some in a spray bottle. Spray the offensive areas down at home, then drive to a nearby car wash and spray it down again.

Then hit it with the car wash blaster. Take along some cardboard and towels so you can get down low without having to roll around in the water.

if you went five hundred miles and still get smoke and smell I'd be looking for a leak somewhere unless you never drove over 20 mph. on my 85 the speedo cable jumped out of a clip and was against the exhaust. couldn't figure why it always smelled and then found that. rubber in the shield and the gear oil traveling up the cable combine to make an noxious odor.

I had a plastic bag stuck to my exhaust once. That smell lasted alot more than 500 miles.

Well it doesn't smoke as bad as it did at first. I used to be able to see the smoke in my rear view mirror, now it's just coming up from the shifter boot (its torn) into the car when I'm stopped. I guess I will crawl under it tonight and see how much is still soaked on the exhaust. Then I will take some degreaser and let it soak, then try and scrub as much as I can off. After I get it all off I will drive it around a good bit and then check for leaks.

I sprayed some degreaser on the transmission case and took a pressure washer to it. Drove the car for about 150 miles, it smoked a little but once we got up to the drag strip (about 50 miles away) it wasnt smoking anymore. It still has that gear oil smell but not as bad as before. Thanks for the info guys
