What else will work in an '87 300ZX

Hello all.

I've heard rumors that other Nissan vehicles parts, like a Maxima, are interchangeable. I've been looking for a used tranny to replace my 300ZX's very tired one. Would one from a Maxima work??

Well since I assume your a girl we'll play nice, right? PICS! :P

No, that transmision will not work, maximas are fwd (front wheel drive) where as the Z31 is rwd (rear wheel drive) hence tow very different transmissions. Best bet is to get a Z31 tranny that matches yours, wether it's n/a, turbo or automatic.

my transmission cries for help when my car turns on. I think the shift inserts (or whats left of them) for third gear are rolling around the tranny case and messing @#$%& up.

just an fyi. you know, cause that was important info.

Ok...Yes, I'm a girl ;). So please play nice. I'm having a hell of a time finding a tranny (believe it or not) and a harder time finding a cheap donor ZX. With that said I have another question. Been trying to find a rebuild kit and have been asked this question by the Company with the Kits...."There are two different kits for fs5w71 in an 300zx 6cyl 5 speed, based off of the 2nd gear synchro ring in your transmission. Is it 1 ring for 2nd gear or made up of 3 pieces for 2nd gear". Do I have to tear the tranny apart to get the answer to their question?

No. You can download the factory service manual for xenonz31.com and click on the Manual transmission section.
