strong fuel odor
Posted by: reggiex3

Every time I drive my Z it gives off a strong fuel odor. It is especially noticeable when I drive with the windows open, and if I park it in the garage and close the garage door the whole garage smells like gas. It is not so strong inside the car when driving with the windows closed. The injector campaign has been performed on it and I have checked dozens of times for fuel leaks around the engine and under the car and found none. A car-savvy co-worker suggested it might be caused by a plugged charcoal canister, and when I checked the canister via the FSM, sure enough, one of the B vents (the one only on the turbo models) that should allow leakage is completely plugged. Does everyone agree this could be the cause of the fuel odor, and is this something I should be concerned about?

Hey phx, that’s too funny. Since my canister doesn’t work right, I might as well remove it too. Did the weight reduction noticeably improve your Z’s acceleration?

the weight reduction of 1 lb?

Removing the Evap. canister on a system designed for it can be a significant issue due to fuel vapor in the engine bay, any other system that requires a sealed tank, as well as of course passing any emissions testing required.

Well no, I noticed absolutely nothing by removing the canister... .except of course that my Z now smells like fuel, especially on hot summer days.

I cut the vent line in the back near the tank (it goes along the passenger frame rail) and placed a small fuel filter there and a small section of fuel hose going from the filter to the atmosphere. I then pulled all the unused vent line out.

My canister stopped working, was acting like a large vacuum leak and I decided I didn't want it so I just removed it. I could care less about emissions. I'll drive my Z, registered or not. Damn the man.

No, I didn't mean to change the subject with my attempted humor. My first questions remain; do you think the plugged canister may be the cause of the fuel smell, and does it need to be addressed? I would prefer to stay within Nissan's emission specifications, and to be legal, because annual safety inspections are mandatory in my state.

If the canister is not functioning properly, this is probably the source of your fuel smell. Check the hose from the vent line to the canister, and test the purge valves to make sure they work.

Pray you don't get pulled over with expired tags, expensive fines and license penalties. They can even cite you for being parked with expired tags.

yeah... I don't drive the Z NOW because its in pieces... but when its not i'll still drive it... just like I continue to drive my Jeep right now and I don't have a license. =)

Laws don't really matter to me much at all unless I am getting in trouble for breaking one. Then I'm pissed for a short time, but such is life.

I never claimed to be either of those things, so it shouldn't be a disappointment that I'm not.

PHXZ31...I'm just going to assume, since you dont have a license, that you dont have insurance either... and THAT I would have a problem with seeing as how that is how I lost my first 300ZX

perhaps you shouldn't assume...

And after tomorrow afternoon I'll have a license again. It was only suspended for not paying a ticket on time.

It is kind of hard not to make such assumptions given the fact that you so blatantly flaunt your disregard for the laws set in place for the safety of both yourself, but more importantly other drivers around you. Sorry for being a prick, but I don't find the way you seem to boast about your disregard for the law amusing. And yes... just in case anyone is wondering. I am a police officer. :-)

I don't like people to know who i really am or what I'm really about unless they know me personally. Sometimes I tend to purposefully throw people off base, or I tend to play the role of the devil's advocate. Keeps people guessing.

Anyways, I do find it amusing to stir up a little emotion in people.

If you have a crash while driving without a license or insurance and someone gets killed, it will stir up more than a little emotion, and it will not be amusing. Been there.

If I get in a crash WITH a license AND insurance AND someone gets killed, it still will stir up more than emotion and will not be amusing.

We are in agreement. Lets drop this, I was being facetious and there's no need to persist this into a debate when none exists.

He's not the worse offender, i'ld be more worried about your next door neighbour plotting to stab your cat. Or be more worried about what G W Bush has to say about when the next terrorist attacks will be. Hahahaha! Or where your next dollar is coming from, or where is your wife.

Someone like phxz31 I wouldn't be worried about, I have insurance so I couldn't care a damn less, but thanx for sharing your info phxz31, not that we needed to hear more criminal activities.

Gotta get to work somehow. If my license is suspended for not paying a fine on time, what are you gonna do when you carry around 300lbs of tools, a ladder, and $20,000 worth of computer/network/phone system equipment for work? You sure ain't gonna ride a bus or a bike.

Got the letter in the mail on Friday, paid it and got my license back yesterday. I find it funny that everybody is so quick to call me criminal when I originally provided such little/vague information. Funny the way peoples' minds work...
