Forum Suggestion for tech articles
Posted by: DMS
Date: July 13, 01:28AM

I have a suggestion that may help alleviate the search issues a tad bit for those willing to actually search. Its a bit of a stretch, but other forums do it so?

I am a member of the 311s.org discussion forum and they have in a separate forum a category of threads for technical data for the roadster community to use. They can only be veiwed if your logged in their so if your not already a member you cant see it. Not sure why it is that way.

Not sure how well the system would work as Zcar.com is SO much bigger than 311s.org and Roadster owners dont have the same "feel" as here. Basically my suggestion is that members would be able to vote a thread good or bad and make it a STICKY of sorts with enough good votes. Moderators after a month or so pull it and stick it in a tech sub forum. Posts/articles would have to be carefully selected cause zcar can fill a forum full of threads pretty fast and just burry info which is part of the problem now as I see it... but VERY GOOD INFO from several years back and on is just lost in the chaos of thousands of posts.

I miss Kammy's "CLICKY"'s I guess

AT LEAST those of us that use the search feature might benifit from something similar.

Just a thought

Vote the threads off the board..

My vote goes to 'clean' the 'e-mail/AIM conversations' threads that clutter up the search function by people too damn lazy to type a single period or other punctuation mark into the SUBJECT LINE before hitting the 'post' button.

So they put 25 threads all with '280ZXT into 240Z Wiring Diagrams' so when people search on subject line...they get sh*t!

The Subject Line should DEFAULT TO BLANK instead of parroting the original subject line. And then they will be forced to type something in there.

And in the process, going forward, the search function will get better.

Oh, and if we're voting...can we vote people off our island as well???

Former Article Section

We used to have a technical articles section which included a handful of articles, but I can't seem to find it this morning. Has it been removed?? Unfortunately, if they're too lazy to search the forum content, they'll be too lazy to search the articles section too.

My suggestion for the new 70-83 crowd.................

Put a warning header that stays at the top of the 70-83 Tech Page that states:

"If you do not own a Factory Service Manual and are not willing to spend at least a few days familiarizing yourself with the basic design of this 30+ year old automobile, please sell it and purchase something else."

"At the very least, please read Blues Tech tips and the first 30 pages of posts on the tech forum prior to making any additions."

"If you like to bump your gums about car stuff and pretend to be a player, go to the other forums where picking out the latest tire tread design or stroking each others ego about all the latest aftermarket gadgets is totally acceptable as TECHNICAL discussions."

You will be happy there and we might actually be able to evolve the first gen forum back into a useful tool for those that are really serious about restoring or maintaining the early Z cars!

Just a thought...............

Wise words from TonyD to consider PRIOR to starting you 1st gen Z project:

"If you think of putting time and money into an old Z is an 'investment' you are sorely mistaken. It is a hole suspended in mid air by four rubber donuts---donuts which you can not eat. Into this hole you throw shovel fulls of money, and it dissapears. You will never see it back."

I've thought that some type of sticky section on commonly asked legit tech questions may be of some value and eliminate the clutter that Tony references. If we're looking at some improvements, I'd like to see a section dedicated to racing - drag, autocross, time trials...

How about, before a new member is allowed to post, they must take a basic quiz on the subject of whatever chassis model they own? They can use the search function, Blue's Tips, Xenon's site, whatever... If they pass the quiz, then they can post. If they fail, they have to wait one day before they can retake the quiz. Yeah, it's a lot of programming, but hell, it will at least force these "spoon feedees" to learn a little about their car before they take it apart and screw it up for the next owner after they give up on it.
