Breaking up...

Hey, finally had time to play with the Z. Got an 83 zxt. It breaks up and sputters when it hits 3k-3.5k, sometimes. It reads very lean, and if i let off the gas, it seems to idle high for a few moments. My guesses are: Timing is off, Vac leak, Clogged fuel filter/line/system... IDK. I just replaced the AFM with a Reman, and i havent' really had any time to play with it. Just got her running yesterday. Any tips or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you made the common mistake of washing the engine, then check the throttle position switch. Famous thing.

Your guesses are very good places to start looking for problems. Let us know what you find.

I once washed my Engine(First Car, 81zx), and then couldn't figure out why it wouldn't rev up past 3k... lol Oh the things you learn...

Kriz, get a meter and test your tps. That rpm is about where the tps sends signal to the injectors to start firing again for power and so if you're running lean and sputtering, you aren't getting fuel when you are supposed to. First test the switch, then do the "noid light" thing (or use a multimeter with the needle, not digital. If the needle flicks, you have signal.) and then keep tracking.

Same basic troubleshooting as a couple above you has to do.

Ok. so i go to Check the TPS, and find out the wires are pretty rugged. The harness to car contains two wires, , the Harness to TPS contains three wires.... all are cut and now i don't know where to go. and to top it all off, now the car will not start, the starter was fine yesterday, now it just clicks... hmm... back to the books. any clues?

Starter clicking is either bad battery (not enough amps to turn the engine over) or a bad ground wire.
For the wires, service manual will have the wiring diagram in it. Just find the TPS and you may be able to correct wiring as she is.

Unless there is something horribly wrong, the TPS does exactly NOTHING above IDLE. The turbo engine version does not use the WOT contacts of the TPS.

But it is still susceptible to the "wet TPS" problems from engine washing, or rain splashing. You don't want the IDLE contacts closing with the engine at high RPMs. It confuses the CECU.

I am located in South Fort Myers, near Estero FL. If any one is familiar with the area, i'd love to meet up. I took the Starter off and ran it up to Advance Auto Parts(Discount) and they tested it and told me it was good, It looked fine to me... Is it possib;e that maybe something Slipped in while i had the Filter off and is physically STOPPING the engine from Turning over? That is what it seems like to me. I was thinking about having some one helping me push it to pop the clutch and Start it the Hard way... How bad of an idea is that exactly???

I pop-start mine all the time. Don't do it if there's something inside the cylinders as you mentioned.

Right. Well. I checked the Flywheel, to see if i could move it, and it moved freely, so i had my Dad help me push and tried to Start it. It Started, and then sputtered ridiculously and shot out so much smoke i almost couldn't see in FRONT of me. It sputttered and rpms dropped and ran like poo. if i hit the gas it would hesitate, but go, and pop. I don't know. Then i got it home, and tried to start it again, still the same results(Starter not operating)... Anyhthing? could a blown HG have that effect?
