Engine Sputtering & Wanted to Die
Posted by: mickey_bigdaddy

Just changed the AFM to a rebuilt one. It drove fine the first day (I only drove it about 15 minutes). Left it standing for 2 days and just took it out for a drive. About 10 minutes into the drive, I stopped at a red light and the car died. Couldn't get it started. Waited about 10 minutes and it started up. Drove it about 2-3 minutes and it started to sputter and wanted to die. I had to keep it rev'd up to keep it running. Got it home and in the garage and it idles fine. Doesn't want to die. Any ideas what could be wrong?

Fixes that I have already done:
1. new vacuum lines and connected them properly.
2. new distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, plugs, coil
3. rebuilt AFM
4. new injector connectors
5. new water temp switch and thermal transmitter
6. clean lines for fuel pump.....already filled up car about 3 times and it ran fine, just a little rich with old AFM.
7. set valve lash
8. set timing 20 degrees BTDC
9. new fuel filter
10 new & adjusted TPS & new connector
11. EFI tests per the FSM
12. new air filter
13. seafoam in gas & brake booster vacuum line
14. new O2 sensor

Measure the fuel pressure right next to the fuel filter. Let us know. Norm K.

Possibly the IC module getting hot and crapping out.

I checked the fuel pressure. It is about 29-30 psi at idle (700 rpm). When I give it more throttle, it gets up to about 34-35 psi max.

I drove it this morning and filled the gas tank up (it was a 1/4 full yesterday). It seemed to run better for a little bit, but then it just died as I was driving down the road and then it started back up again. All within a second or two. It tried to die once at a light but I just put in the clutch and gave it more gas. Seemed to sputter much less...I could just barely feel it as I was driving but it was still there.

Does your tachometer drop to zero when the engine dies, even if you are still rolling? If so, that's an indicator that the ignition control module on the side of the distributor is failing.

It could be the coil as well beginning to overheat.

But first thing to check is to, with the engine idling, go around the engine bay lightly tugging and moving around each wiring harness to see if there is a broken wire or loose connection. Start with the one between #5,6 spark plug holes and work your way around.

Yes, it did that. I thought that was wierd when I saw it when the tach went to zero. But my distributor doesn't have the IC Module on it?

The 82 & 83 turbo car have the crank angle sensor module inside the distributer, under the protective cover plate.
One of the clues is the tach dropping to zero while the motor is still turning.
I think that is what Easyguy is referring to.

Okay, so then the tach dropping is a clue to the crank angle sensor being bad? Is there a test for this so that I can confirm? There isn't anything in the FSM for the non-IC distributor. Also, AutoZone says the crank angle sensor comes with the distributor, $227. I hope I can find it separate if I need to buy it.

I checked around by pulling wires and looks like my AFM connector may be bad too. I pulled on it and the car died. There's a lot of electrical tape on it so the thing has been worked on before. Is there a replacement part number for it?

Would the AFM losing it's connection cause the tach to drop to zero?

I took the car out again and it didn't die but I could feel a slight hesitation. Especially when I got in the lower rpms. I drove it around the neighborhood in 2nd gear at 2500 rpms and it sputtered real lightly. I could barely feel it but, it was there.
