started but short lived.

my 280zx was starting intermitently because it was not getting spark at times. i did the ignition system check in the fsm it turned out i had a short in my pickup coil( i believe) and i got a new pick up coil and installed it. the car started right up. i let it warm up and decided to take it for a drive. it had a little less power than befor. i just assumed the timing was off. and i started heading back home. and all power just cut out. it would not restart at all so i went home. when i came back it had a really rough time starting the tach would kinda hop but it wouldent start. i tried a little longer and it started and i tried to accelerate and it died. it started again faster and died again. i got it moving and got it down the hill home. it would idle fine but when i tried to accelerate it would just lose all power and the tach would drop to zero. does this sound like an icu problem, timing, or something i might have done when i was inside the distributor.

mine had similar problems, died in the middle of an intersection. turned out to be the temp sensor on the block on pass side. it had a bad connection and would cut the car off whenever i hit a bump or something.

Temp Sensor?

The temp sensor would not make the Tach Bounce.

Get Freez-It from Radio Shack and search the Archives on how to use it to diagnose intermitten heat-related failures of the ignition module.

It's what should have been done before you started replacing parts.

Sounds like a failing module to me...

yeah, mine did tony. my problem was in the wiring though. the engine movement, stop and go, pretty much any movement would cause a bad connection.of course im talking about the CHTS, not the temp sensor around the tstat housing.

The connections on the modules are kind of tricky and short to ground if you're not carefull. Norm K.
