Cross rod joints?
Posted by: attworth
Date: January 03, 2009 07:05AM

Continuing my other topic regarding replacement of front end steering parts -

I noticed that the ends of the cross rod in my car are also pretty worn. It doesn't appear that they are the screw in type like the outer tie rods. Is there any replacement for just those ends?

Black Dragon has the entire center rod for 275$ (ouch!) MSA has the same part for 218$ (still ouch!)

Any ideas folks? It'd seem pointless to replace everything else and still have those two joints being bad.

What the heck are cross rod joints? Do you mean ball joints? Steering linkeages? What?

I think he means inner tie rods. Check the price of a reman steering rack. It was cheaper to buy a rack for the 78 than 2 inner tie rods. The rack was slightly more than 1/2 what inners would cost. Check several of the chains as price varied. FYI, A-1Cardone (crap shoot but mine worked.)

Cross rod is the correct term and its for a power steering S130, not a S30 with a rack. Unless you're willing to do some machining, you need to buy the complete cross rod.

Junkmam, look at that drawing that Attworth pulled from his FSM again. Where do you see a "Steering rack", because I don't see one and that steering system was used from 6/78 to 8/81.

To Attworth, the end joints on the "Cross rod" are not replaceable and you have to buy the whole thing.

The part # is 48560-P7125 and the list price from Nissan is $220.42. I went to [www.nissanparts.cc], which is a Nissan dealership in Washingon state and they sell it for $167.96 + $20.15 shipping. That means the total cost from "nissanpart.cc" is $188.11 and that gives you a savings of $29.89 over MSA.

YORGO- That last photo is just wrong! A joint that size would lose mor smoke to the air than you could possibly inhale. That would mean wasting over 3/4ths of the joint. And we all know "waste not want not"! Those kids need to break that one up into 50 fair sized ones and pass them out . And who in that state of mind has the concentration to lick and glue all those papers together to make that monster!!

yeah, I caught that with my blackfoot tribe eye. I brag about being half French. The other half is Native.

Didn't realize he had that setup of steering system. I've got rack and pinion and the setup is completely different. Used to have power steering but removed it.

Yorgo, I'd tell you how, but the mods aren't allowing any pictures that may not be safe for the kiddies, remember? Anyhow, let's just say it involves sex.... Keep reading, buddy. You'll find some pics out there!

Attworth, what end of the world are you in? I know in Canada, the Blackfoot roamed from the Rockies in Alberta east to the shores of Lake Ontario. If you're in the US, how far south did they make it?

I`m part Blackfoot too, not sure how much though. I`m originally from Boston, my mothers side of the family is from Canada, so I`d guess we were from the eastern Blackfoot tribes.

Maybe we have enough to start a Blackfoot Z club?

Just an update for anybody with the crappy steering setup known as reciprocating ball - Courtesy Parts does not carry the cross rod. Although they can order it from Japan for 190$ and take 4-8 weeks to deliver. I think I'll be ordering it from Canada or MSA.
