Slow acceleration

I have a 83 280zx turbo automatic stock parts I believe. It was sitting for about 5 years but it is still in good condition. The car runs fine after 2500 rpms in first gear, but that first little bit of accel is really slow. I've tried checking the vacuum system but I did not see anything wrong. I'm not sure how to do the vacuum pressure thing, and I'm not good with cars. I know it has a leak in the exhaust manifold, and a leak towards the back of the muffler where it goes over the rear axle. I've changed the air filter, replaced the whole gas gauge unit thing, and the filter, checked the air flow meter thing on the intake and it's fine. I read in the book it might be the ignition timing or something like that. Also when I have it in park it doesn't hesitate at all the rpms shoot up quick. Just once I'm in drive it does the slow crap.

If someone could help me figure out how to fix this it would be awesome. It's my first car, and a pretty sweet one at that, but if I can't fix it my uncle will take it away.

Re: Slow acceleration

Your ignition timing could be the problem with the hesitation, because it is not firing correctly.
Other option would be your o2 sensor if its bad it is not reading correctly both were my problem and after fixing both I ahad no more hesitation.
Have you also put new gas in it and check the fuel pump? sitting around for 5 years could be old gas try 91 octane.

Re: Slow acceleration

The night my uncle gave me the car we went to shell and filled it up. Is the ignition timing easy to fix or would it need to be done by a shop?

Re: Slow acceleration

Should be pretty easy my car is a little different from yours doing the timing, but if you go to xenons130.com you can look up the factory service manual for your car and it will tell you how to adjust the timing on the car.
also read the efi manual (AKA the bible) on that site there is a wealth of knowledge I learned about my car from that website

Re: Slow acceleration

No problem if the problems still persist though fix the exhaust leak that makes more of a difference than you think. Just be careful though all the years of rust build up will make it tough, even on the o2 sensor make sure you dont break bolts or the whole process will be a tough one to fix getting all the broke bolts out as well.

Re: Slow acceleration

timing is adjusted by loosening up the dizzy and turning it slightly. Use a timing gun while your at it. The specs are found in the FSM.

Re: Slow acceleration

If it is just slow off the line the kick down solenoid might be bad or disconnected. Pull it into first manually and tromp the gas. If it takes off like a scalded cat it is the kickdown solenoid not working. The vacuum modulator alters shift points but the kickdown is needed to get it going. Had the same problem with an 81 my son is beating me with a Ranger pickup and it would run great once you got past around 40. Found the kickdown solenoid had been disconnected. If it isn't that then start looking at the timing and other stuff.

Re: Slow acceleration

No the green z is not mine.... yet

this is what it most likely will look like, with different rims of course and maybe a different hood. 280zone from Phoenix makes a beautiful SS camaro style FG hood.

Re: Slow acceleration

When I put it in 1 on the little drive thingy it takes off at the same speed. I have not messed with it because during the week I have school ALL THE TIME!! it drives me nuts, but when the weekend comes around I'll check out the things you guys are telling me about and see if anything works and I'll be careful I don't want to mess up the car.. Thanks everyone

Re: Slow acceleration

Add a signature that shows what year z you have and where you are. That way some one local might be able to help you out.
