Help! my 82 280 is giving me issues
hi.i'm a new guy here and im having an issue with my 280zx. i have put two alternators on it in 4 months. and it seems like something is wiping them out. so i am just wondering..there is a wire down there that is branched off the 12v source wire and i dont know where it goes. it was never hooked up when i got the car. and the extra wire does have 12 volts to it...so if anyone can help me i would greatly appreciate it. need some help today lol...its my only ride to work.
Thanks everyone,
Chris
thanks Bro. i'll check it out.
there is supposed to be a resistor looking thing on that second line.
Three things plug to the back of the alternator. One is the rubber coated t-shaped plug.
One is the wire from positive battery and also has that mentioned extra wire.
The third is marked E. It's the only wire left plus that extra wire from the battery wires. Thing is, that extra wire should have a filter looking thing, sort of a canister shaped..something (resistor?) on it that also screws on to the "E" terminal on back of the alternator.
For pictures go to www.atlanticz.ca under the technical tab.
Just in case you couldn't find it

Is it aftermarket. I went thru 3 alt at the Zone and 2 at O'Reilly until I have one that has lasted since last July. Yes there is no reason for the problems. My guess there was a bad batch of diodes sent to the re-manufacturers.
.
it is a capacitor
Thank you, Roger.
i've had no issues with my ultima alternator from o'reillys, im not sure if it has anything to do with mine having a 70amp cause of the turbo model, but i have no complains as of yet. and the good thing about them is they're lifetime warranty so if it does happen to go out, i can just swap it out for a new one fo free :D
Sooooo. What is the actual job of that capacitor? I ask because I don't have one and my alternator wont turn on unless I manually excite the L terminal with 12V. If its just for radio noise, I'm not too worried.
This is my 74 260Z with an 83 turbo transplant.
The JOB of a capacitor is either "coupling or decoupling" a signal. Here it is used as a small filter for the radio. MODERN radios all have complex noise filter networks inside them or ON their supply wire as a small plastic box. YOUR alternator should "get exicited" all by itself. ok 2 questions
1. how do you excite the L terminal?
2 what mods are required to use the Maxima alternator?
I have a loose 12V wire under my hood. Secure of course. I start the car, pop the hood and touch the wire to my L terminal. I know its wrong but it works. The car isnt on the road and this is temporary until I can figure out what the hell is going on.
Hmmm i might have to do that as well. My alt charges when it wants too. I just got a new battery last night and sooo wanted to burn the local ricers.
I can't figure out whats going on with mine and I cant test anything because my ECU is at JWT getting fixed. I should have it back in a few days.
Get a spare ECU, used. For a "back-up." NK
I cant NK. I have to use a reprogrammed Jim Wolf Z31 ECU since I am running a Cobra MAF and 440cc injectors.
hey 83na280zx......are you chris miller? with the silver Z?
I'm just going to swap in a good alt to see if thats my issue. I think the diods or somthing internal is starting to fail. It was charging fine and now its not, it seems to go back and forth every few days.

go to xenons130.com and get the fsm for free, look up the wiring diagram.
