Compatible gas tanks for a 1979 280ZX-R
Can anyone tell me which other years would be compatible with a 1979 280ZX-R gas tank?
Kim

What exactly IS the difference between a ZX-R and a regular ZX? Just cosmetic differences?
I haven't been able to decipher the VIN....Here it is if anyone can! I catch questions at the DMV every year because the VIN is so short.
HS130132132
Two obvious differneces would be the racing stripes and the whale tail. My Dad bought this car new and gave it me a year or so ago.
The VIN really means nothing on these cars. The H means that it has the L28, as all north american cars did, and the S130 is the just the chassis designation for the 79 to 83 model years. The remaining numbers are just the order in which they rolled off the line, so yours was the 132,132nd ZX produced. A G in the VIN means it is a 2+2.

The only difference between the normal 280ZX and the 280ZX-R is the decals, Rear Wing, and it has a full black interior with less sound deadening. All mechanical parts are the same as normal 280ZX 2 seat cars.
This is a window sticker for a 280ZX-R. Note the Limited edition package.

Shouldn't that be HLS130132132? I don't think it's a right-hand drive. The "L" would mean left-hand drive.
EDIT: Strangely enough, Xenon's post also has a VIN without the "L" (HS130). Were all ZX-Rs like that, or is that a RHD?
For you VIN decoders, from a quick google search: VIN decoder
The list of known zx-r vins is linked to this page. Your number is on the list of known vins for the zx-r that this page includes.
That's interesting.
I never knew a whale tail came stock on a 280
Well maybe I am using the wrong terminology...rear deck spoiler is the proper description, but we always called it whale tail....and I believe it only came on the one thousand and nine units made as 280ZX-R.
Yup the rubber whale tail weighs a ton though.
I believe the gas tanks are the same on 79-83 280ZX
oh and yes they are minius the 2+2 i believe
I love how your dogs just chillin in front of the car like "Hey what you lookin at punk?"
LOL...Yes...that would be Hashbrown...he wouldn't move.

Mechanically there isn't anything special or different about a ZX-R.
Any tank that would regularly fit a 79 280ZX coupe would work.
I don't know if there are any differences at all between 79-83 coupe tanks, I would imagine the 2+2s have different tanks though, but I am not certain of this.
