NEW ENGINE!!
Special ordered my 2006 350Z Touring Coupe in July 2005, picked it up in October 2005 and drove it home (about 300 miles). Noticed a little oil consumption...no big deal. Told the dealership and they said just to watch it. Dealer sent me a TSB on "Oil Conmsumption" about one year ago. I decided to take it in for a "Check Up" today. Dealership called and said they are ordering me a 'New Engine"! They did not even drain the old engine oil out and refill and ask me to come back, to see if it really had an oil consumption problem?. What engine can I expect to get? Wonder if they would put the new Nismo engine in as a replacement? I was very surprised. What do you guy's think?
My guess is they figured out the cause of the abnormal oil consumption and range of engines built with that component. Probably a cost reduced part or changed supplier. After that point, they don't need to complete the test and just replace the engine.
2 things you need to check.
1. Ask if your getting a NEW engine or a factory rebuilt engine. There is a BIG difference here. Factory rebuilt means, they checked it, replaced the faulty component, and sent it back out. You will be getting an engine with an unknown history.
2. What Justin said. Use a paint pen and mark the engine in several discrete locations. Across this joint between both heads and the block, intake manifold and the block, and oil pain / block. This will tell you if A: They replaced the engine, or B: changed out components.
Write down the serial number off the engine block too. The new engine should have a different number, and probably contain a "V2" in it.
I say let phxZ31 have a look at it.
Also, the dealership knows that the more time you bring back the car for an issue they are well aware of will cost them more money in the long run.
Those are great ideas (above) to really see if they do what they say.

You will get the same engine that they are replacing, the VQ35DE rev up. The Nismo engine that is currently available (VQ35HR) is completely different than yours, and no, they will not be putting it in for you. Good luck with the new engine.
The new version is called the V-2...the old engine was V-1.
The new version has modified rings, pistons & other changes Nissan won't say.
The V-2 has much more torque.
I,ve had my new V2 for over 12K miles, still consumes oil but just under the TSB level. I'm not sure about more torque but it is smoother.
I thought the V2 had less torque? If I'm not mistaken, every new VQ revision had less torque than the one before it except the VQ35HR which had the same torque as the V2 rev-up engine, just more peak HP.
After getting our engine replaced in 08 (original 03 pre-order car) we noticed a significantly better throttle response. Seems to have alot more "oomph". Torque curve seems to be better. Better fuel consumption too by about 1 mpg on the highway.
I am thinking that the "improvements" people are experiencing are new engines versus old oil consuming engines. Without hard numbers, it is hard to tell - but phxZ31 is right on when he said that each revision has less torque and more HP.
Didn't burn any oil here. Piston failure in cyl. 5. Ringland break-out supposedly. Have engine at home. Will get endoscope to check myself and then repair.

On your original engine, or on your replacement???
original engine failed. New 08 engine is great, so far.

they'll probably hold your car for a couple days and give it back to you with the same engine. you should put a mark on it somewhere so you know if they do this. ;)
