2014 Detroit Auto Show NEW Z CAR

Nissan Working on Lighter Next-Gen Z

Datsun prepares to take on the Subaru BRZ with a smaller, cheaper successor to the 370Z.

Datsun prepares to take on the Subaru BRZ with a smaller, cheaper successor to the 370Z.
Successive generations of cars have a nasty habit of getting bigger and more expensive. But not the next Nissan Z. According to Edmunds news site Inside Line, Nissan is planning on making the next generation of its popular sportscar lighter and cheaper than the current 370Z.The iconic Z was revived in 2002 with the 350Z, a car that quickly became a favorite among sportscar enthusiasts, drifters and tuners around the world. That was updated with a 3.7-liter V6, more angular styling and updated equipment in 2008 for the 370Z that remains on the market.

With stiff competition from the likes of the Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT86/Scion FR-S and the Hyundai Genesis coupe, however, Nissan needs a replacement. Work is reportedly already underway on the next-gen Z car, but it likely won't be ready for debut until the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, which is still a good year and a half away. When it does come around, though, we could be looking at a smaller, cheaper vehicle with a turbo four instead of the current V6. As long as the turbocharger can make up for the two cylinders that stand to go missing, that would be just fine by us.

It would be just fine by me if they got back to the roots with a commitment to a new high rev, high torque inline 6 with DOHC. To further enhance the roots tradition it should interchange with the L6 series or at least use similar mounting points. These are 2 key factors that should be used for an epic reception.

All they need to do is take the S2k engine, add 2 cylinders and make it an inline Then of course Boost the heck out of it.

Would be good to see. If they do it maybe they will do it right and overbuild the engine and give the boost addicts some room to safely play!

Re: 2014 Detroit Auto Show NEW Z CAR

Could we have one that looks like the old S30 bodies without the big booty rear end and have a longer hood.

It's getting to the point of trying to figure out which way the new cars are pointing - especially with the clear rear lights .

with a v6 or I4, the long hood is just an evolutionary leftover.

I4, long hood, great weight distribution (49F/51R)

370Z: V6, short(ish) hood, crap weight distribution for a 2-seat FR car (54/46)

Re: 2014 Detroit Auto Show NEW Z CAR

Really really REALLY hope the FR-S/BRZ has lit a fire under Nissan's arse and they give us what we deserve: a modern ~2750 lb. S13 240SX (although Toyobaru has already given us exactly that!), a new ~2750 lb. Z based on the same lightweight platform (as opposed to a supermassive luxury sedan platform) with 50/50 or better weight distribution (as opposed to the 370's 54/46), AND a lightweight 510 lineup as on the same platform well (2-door, 4-door, 5-door).

I'd buy at least two out of such a lineup over then next couple of years!

See i'm not the only one who thinks the s2k is a good car, even though it is a honda. Still waiting on the rumors of an s3k.
