Actually there is an Alamo beer.

THE Alamo is the Thermopoli of the West.

It's a very big Texas thing and a requirement for Texas citizenship to remember the Alamo.

At least before drinking the beer.

Despite the vague similarities between the defenders of the Alamo dressing in women's clothing and hiding under beds to escape their final demise and the Spartan Homoerotic Orgies in the all-male deployed army I don't see the Alamo as anything like Thermopylae.

At least the Spartans did their business before the battle, not as some crowning glory in utter defeat.

Going down swinging on your knees is a bit different than being found crawling on your knees in a dress...

Again Tony - what History book says any defenders were in dresses?

There were some women and children and a few slaves (old men). All the male combants were slain - some did surrender and that was an hohorable thing at that time when a battle was completely lost.

However Santa Anna decreed that all who took up arms against him were pirates and would be executed.

Aso note - none of the participants were "professional" soldiers. some were militia trained but the only real experience soldiers were Col Fannin (some West Point training) Crokett -Indian wars and Genl Sam Houston - indian wars.

Older Historians compared the Alamo to Thermopylae - the Spartans were the best of the professional soldiers of their day.

The rag-tag group of farmers, shop keepers and just plain folks that stood up to over whelming odds against the largest and best trained Army in the Western Hemispher (the Mexican Army) deserve just as much recognition for their bravery as any group of freedom fighters in history.

These guys stood up and fought to the end regardless of how that end came. They should not have been there. Even a force of 2,000 could not have successfully defended the Alamo. It was a Church - not a fortress. It's massive area and lack of battlements made it a trap.

But still - men who did not have to fight there - did. For eachother and refused to be pushed of their land.

That's more heoic to me than some ancient SS types who lived their whole lives for war and glofified to die in battle becasue that was the thing to do.

Read Santa Ana's notes from battle, as well as detailed accounts (I migh suggest those not written or published in Texas) to get the details on what some of those "Brave Heroes" were wearing, when they were found before "surrendering"---popular nationalistic bullshit sounds great to rile the blood. But the truth if the end of the Alamo is not necessarily written in American Books alone...
The truth is out there, seek and ye shall find.

I may cross a war or colonial territory regained once and a while. But this strange freaky stuff? You can bet I'm dead spot-on about! "XXX was found dressed in woman's clothing and hiding under a bed in an attempt to avoid the inevitable" I believe was the exact quotation I read...

I probably have read a roomful of books on historical encounters and battles. Shite like that sticks!

Bowie died on top of his bed (he was sick in bed at the time of the battle) either shot or bayoneted. Two Texicans hid in the Sacristy with the women and children. One was bayoneted while hiding behind the women and the other convinced the Mexican troops that he was a prisoner and was spared. Five to seven Texicans surrendered (and were later executed under Santa Ana's orders) and the rest were killed in battle or running away from the fort by the Mexican Calvary. The women and children and a couple slaves were spared.
