Thanks for the link. I was wondering about the 90 vs 80 amp. What about the TT needs the extra 10 amps. Seems like there will be more mechanical load to make those extra 10 amps.

I like that link. Thanks. About what a rebuild cost from Napa. New so no core is nice.

Was there a difference between the years. The one you listed says 94-96?

As I recall the one I got was labelled as 94-96 and worked fine, I crossed referenced other altys and they showed just one kind for all years. These are the cross-referenced part numbers it replaces:

AC DELCO 334-1173
ARROWHEAD AMT0115
ARROWHEAD (OEM) A2T33593, A2T33593B
DELCO REMAN 10464159
LESTER 13478
MITSUBISHI A2T33593, A2T33593A, A2T33593B, A2T33593C
NISSAN 23100-0P513, 23100-0P515, 23100-0P516
REMY REMAN AR103812
WAI 1-1830-01MI

Going the rebuilt route back in 2012 was around $85 so $112 was compelling for new. I wanted the extra Amps for future sound system expansion. Load on the engine isn't much of an issue if the current draw is 80amps or less....just comes into play when the draw increases.

BTW - pretty sure the TT needed the extra amps for the Hicas system and maybe the adjustable shocks too.

So i bought a new battery yesterday. Just a regular O-Reilly job. The battery I had in there was close to 11 years old. It had a 650CA rating, which according to this chart is only a 520CCA. I went with the lower o-reillys option
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...0423&ppt=C0005
at 650 cca which according to this chart is 825ca (though OR lists at 750).

Glad I didn't got with the 750cca option. See in the picture the new battery is slightly wider and no carry handle

And here is the old batteries date stamp.

5 months shy of 11 years.

The Z fired up within 1 sec of the first crank. It had been sitting for at least a month.

I bought the lower CCA battery as it is my understanding that for the same size of battery the one with the lower CCA will last longer. In order to achieve the higher CCA they have to add more plates in parallel. Thus they use smaller plates. The smaller plates wear faster. I guess they can use the same places just less of them.

I have not got around to actually fixing the alternator. But at least I can drive the Z (for as long as the battery charge holds). Moving it into the garage when the time comes (soon) however will be much easier.

So I go to move the car on friday, less than 5 days after I install the new battery, and the car (battery) is DEAD!! Like dead DEAD DEAD.

I am going with the assumption that the bad alternator (faulty diode in the alternator) caused a major drain on the system.

Still need to clear out the garage in order to roll her in to work on it.

Thoughts?

That could be it or you could have another drain somewhere. How long would it stay running before it started losing power?

Seems like it will run till the battery is dead. I ran it for a couple of minutes it it seemed fine. I initially assume it was alternator due to the low voltage when running (12.2v at the battery terminals).

This car never had a drain before. Seems like more than a coincidence that both the dead alt and major drain at the same time.

Any simple test. I should plan on doing.

Yeah I'd start with the alternator and go from there.
