There are quite a few discussion threads on this forum regarding exhausts. Take a look at them.

IMHO, it really depends on what you want to do with the car. If you're racing, that's one thing. If you want a driver with some pep, that's another. If you care about sound, yet another consideration.

I am using a Magnaflow muffler. Has a nice throaty sound under acceleration but when cruising it's less loud. Notice I didn't say quiet. Even though there's lots of sound deadening in my car, the stereo needs to be cranked up at highway speeds.

These cars are high revving so think carefully about your selection.

are you running an aftermarket header on your car or is it the stock manifold? your exhaust is probably trashed if its original. like Beg said, it really depends on what you want. if i were you, i'd go check out www.certifiedmuffler.com they have a good stock style exhaust for the 280zx and i believe they do customizing also. i'm going with them for my 300zx. honestly dude, i have an 83 280zx back home and i love the stock sound of its original muffler and exhaust (not trashed yet even after all these years)

good luck and welcome to the club. make sure you read and do your research on these forums.

Check around your area for some local car clubs. Some clubs specialize in specific cars (like Zs, Mustangs, Camaros, etc) or brands (like a Chevy club). Other clubs are more service oriented for anybody who likes cars. I'm not necessarily saying you need to join one but those folks are very happy to share what they've learned. You will find recommendations on parts, specialized mechanics in your area and even exhaust shops! You probably would have a chance to actually listen to various cars with different exhausts to get an idea of the direction you may go.

Local car shows are another way to gather information and get ideas ...
