1981 280zx hard starting related to thermotime switch

I tried searching but did not come accross the post regarding hard starting where the person having the problem was directed to check out the thermotime switch located in the thermostat housing. I just wanted to Thank everyone as I read a lot of the posts and normally don't join in. My car started fine at the end of the summer. The engine would start very easily. Then it progressively took longer to start and then took a lot of cranking. I checked the cold start valve at first and cleaned and reinstalled it. Then seeing the post about the switch on the thermostat I took it out. It was difficult to get out and when I did it seemed very clean as I had to turn and turn it and push with a screw driver once the treads were cleared. The reason for this long post is to let people know that with 174,000 there was a build up of junk in that passageway that the switch sits in and the coolant couldn't flow around the end of that switch. If you car has a lot of miles and like me you don't know if the previous owner cleaned the system it might be a good thing to check it out. Also I went to the dealer for gaskets as I didn't want to have any problems reinstalling the thermostat housing. Car starts and runs great now.So Thanks again for the posts and hoping others can benefit from seeing this.

No I haven't had the time yet to do that. So far I just cleaned out the sensor passageway.

Hi chainechat, was your hard starting happening when the engine was cold?

I've a hard start when hot problem and am trying to narrow down the cause.

Thanks!

Ben

Yes the hard start problem started when it turned colder here in Az. I did have a hard start problem when warm and got stranded one day when it would not start. It was related to the fuel injector relay that is hidden next to the battery with a plastic cover on the right inner fender. I suffered for some time trying to find the problem and did fuel pressure testing, which I would recommend as I ended up changing out a lot of parts. Follow the Factory Service Manual which some libraries carry or download. However it is worth a look at the fuel injector relay and all connections. I am waiting on the thermostat gasket to fully take apart the housing as I want to do some maintaince before the summer hits again.

when you cleaned the tts, did you lose much or any anti-freeze ? if so, did you
have to bleed the cooling system, or just replace lost fluid

Re: 1981 280zx hard starting related to thermotime switch

Yes I did loose some antifreese and I had placed a oil catch tray underneath. I was in a rush but probably the best way to do it is to drain some coolant from the radiator. Just enough to have the fluid in the housing not pose a problem and no I didn't have to bleed the system. Do the usual refill and recheck and check after bringing it up to the correct temp. Make sure to add back to the overflow bottle if that is low.
