Just a wild guess here but I'd be thinking you killed the voltage regulator Have the alternator tested.
The car still runs so maybe you're lucky and that's all the damage you did.

Re: hooked up battery wrong need help

I fail to comprehend how anyone could hook up a battery backwards. I'm not flaming you . You would be surprised how many people do it. If everyone knew how explosive a battery is they would learn to do it right or have a shop do it. You have less of a chance of using a match to look down the fuel neck to the gas tank and blowing yourself and your car up than blowing up and/or burning your car to the ground by hooking up the battery or jumper cables backwards. Batteries are far more explosive than gas.
Be thankful you are here to tell the story and not laying in a burn zone thinking about the charred remains of your z.
It sounds like you got off lucky and can fix the car without breaking the bank.

He should get that fixed asap. Overcharging can also cause a battery to explode.

Re: hooked up battery wrong need help

And less expensive, but still a PITA, all the various light bulbs are going to be burning really bright due to the higher voltage, and will start burning out and need replacement. It can kill older radios that don't have decent regulators, it will kill the engine computer, which was already stressed by the reversed voltage, et cetera.

One of our ZCAR.COM forum members in the last two weeks did the same battery trick, and it blew the power supply portion of his ECU module, which killed the engine until he gets his new one.

Re: hooked up battery wrong need help

zxtoy, its easier than you think, here's how I did it.

The car had sat for 27 years, battery that was in there, disconnected, was shot as you could imagine, put new one in. Hooked up one cable, other cable made a 'larger' than normal arc, yet it went on. The corner of my eye saw smoke being let out of the fuseable link and I quickly pulled the cable off.

What happened? The old battery was was spec for the car, dealership put it in at the overhaul, the positive post is closest to the engine, not so on the new battery. Also, both battery cables & ends were black, bad glasses and both cables going down in the same direction. Add to that my excitement of getting a newly overhauled engine, (27 years ago) going again. Accidents and stupid mistakes do happen.

Got a new link, a new pair of battery cables, ONE RED. All other wiring was ok. phew, never again.

Re: hooked up battery wrong need help

I used to work in a battery warehouse. I used to repair batteries that the posts were snapped off. I would drill holes in what was left of the post, melt some lead. Put mold on battery. Pour hot lead into the mold to make a new post. I had 4 batteries blow up on me doing this procedure. I have reversed polarity on batteries. Dry cell, 6 volt, whatever..I have done it with a battery. It is very very easy to hook up a battery wrong. One of my buddies complained that his shop has to work on a smart car. It is a euro model. Can't get a fsm for it. It has a problem with the starter. The starter is digital. It has 6 black wires that go to it. No way to determine what wire does what. That is job security for sure..lol.
