Default Anyone know of any classic Datsun VIN decoders?

I just got a '72 240z and I'm trying too find a free VIN decoder online that'll accept old Datsun VIN numbers. Any help here?

Or a history report that's cheap?

This will not give specific history but is cool for decoding.

A VIN "decoder" seems pretty useless considering that the VIN numbers on these cars are so simple that I can explain all the variations in a few lines...take these prefixes and then tack the production number ###### onto the tail end of it and you will have your full VIN.

HS30-RHD 240z
HLS30-LHD 240z

RS30-RHD 260z
GRS30-RHD 260z 2+2
RLS30-LHD 260z
GRLS30-LHD 260z 2+2

HS30-RHD 280z
GHS30-RHD 280z 2+2
HLS30-LHD 280z
GHLS30-LHD 280z 2+2

Yes, same VIN prefix for both 240z and 280z...confusing, isn't it?

You can see a full breakdown of all models here...

Go to www.blackdragonautomotive.com At the end of the first few pages - index listing- there is a vin decoder on paper. just match up the numbers and codes with what you have to decode it. For paint codes, I believe that is in the engine bay on a plate riveted to the firewall passenger side or on a sticker on the support where the rad is.

looks like somebody beat me to posting that link...but I will mention that if you were looking for some sort of "vehicle history report" you will likely be out of luck because the S30 cars do not fit into the modern 17 digit protocol and are not really tracked in any history report database that I know of.

However...you may be able to find your car in a Zcar registry on the net if the previous owner cared enough to put it in there...there are a few around zhome.com probably has the most complete one
