'83 280ZX Firing Order

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to distributors. I'm going to undertake replacing the distributor cap and I have a few questions about the firing order.

Can anyone tell me what the firing order on a '83 280ZX Non-turbo is? I have a FSM for a '82, but I want to make sure they're the same.

How are the cylinders numbered? I've flipped through the FSM and haven't found this information.

Lastly, how does the firing order correlate to the cap? Clockwise? Counter-clockwise from one?

Re: '83 280ZX Firing Order

Replace ONE plug wire and plug at a time and you will never have a problem.

83' 280ZX currently in restoration.
82' 280ZX parts car for 83', now crushed.
84' 300ZX turbo, rolled, twisted body, crushed.

Re: '83 280ZX Firing Order

Well, thanks to your link, I did find the answer to two of my questions. I see that the firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4 and that it's counter-clockwise on the cap. However, I couldn't find the cylinder numbering that correlates to my particular Z.

I can change them one at a time, but I still want to have this information. If nothing else, I want to have a safety net if something goes wrong.

Thanks for the quick responses. All I need now is to know how the cylinders are numbered.

They are numbered sequentially. That leaves you with a 50-50 chance of being right.

Nice Steve240Z73, 50-50 chance. lol

The front of the engine is cylinder 1 the rest are sequentially numbered to 6, which is at the rear of the engine.

Re: '83 280ZX Firing Order

The front of the engine being the end with the fan on it. Every engine line-up is the same. The end with belts and/or fan on it is the front of the engine, working your way to the other end in that order. 1-2-3-4-5-6. So plan your plug wires to make sure you don't accidentally end up with a short one for your last wire and away you go. I found it easiest to place the wires on the distributor, then place them into the wire holders in the order that they will end up on the engine. Once on the six stack wire clip on the head cover, they will be in the order they go on the engine with 1 being closest to cylinder 1 and 6 being closest to cylinder 6. If you take the time to do this now, then any time you ever need to check plugs or pull the wires for whatever reason, they are a snap to put back on, even if they all come off at the same time.

Re: '83 280ZX Firing Order

First, all straight 6 engines are 1-5-3-6-2-4. #1 on the engine is the front of the car. #1 on the cap points towards the radiator staight on.

*1972 240z* <1985 720 4x4> PARTS 4-sale- 75-84. "Simple" is the solution
